MUN Meeting 10/21/16

Information We are currently accepting MUN style designs for shirts, jackets, etc. Each member who submits a design will receive 1 point, and the member whose design is chosen will receive another point. Two points is also being offered for flyer designs for MUN. Be creative! All the bonus point details are on the updated website. ( The website contains the total MUN points of everyone, the bylaws, the powerpoints used in meetings, up-to-date announcements, and additional resources.

Secretary Elections We will be holding elections for secretary next Thursday after school . If you are interested in running for secretary, please let an officer know and prepare a brief speech. The length of next week’s meeting will be based on the number of people running for secretary. Popular vote will make 70% of the decision while the officers and Mr. Fahler will make up 30%. REQUIREMENTS : Must have missed no more than two meeting this year. Must not have any permanent commitments on Thursday

GA Plenary -one of the largest committees in the UN with 193 delegates
-each delegate has one paper discussing the issues that they want presented at the conference -delegates can voice their opinions on what they think is the largest global issue affecting their country - ⅔ vote from the rest of the delegates to pass regulations or establish committees Countries:

SOCHUM Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee
-Primary Focus: Human Rights -examination of human rights question and the promotion of fundamental freedom -Evaluation of the treatment of children, the advancement of women, and protection of refugees -addresses important social development questions such as the treatment of refugees, juvenile delinquents, crime, drugs, and any other issue that can corrupt the individual right of a person Topic 1: The Right to Privacy in the Digital Age Topic 2: Protecting Women’s Right to an Education in the Developing World

SPECPOL Special Political and Decolonization Committee
- deals with decolonization as well as political topics that are not subject of the General Assembly First Committee -After many countries became independent, SPECTOL merged with the first General Assembly meeting, and it was decided that the First Committee would deal with questions such as arms control and disarmament whereas the GA Fourth would discuss particular conflicts Topic 1: Creation of an Independent Kurdistan Topic 2: Developing a Framework for the Exploration and Settlement of Extraterrestrial Territories

ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council)
Purpose: help plan and execute UN-sponsored social and economic programs Coordinates many related specialized agencies of similar causes Main goal: staying economically relevant in globalized world Example of Past Success: Advisory Group- advice on development goals for poor countries, also report on the socioeconomic conditions of country Lacks political clout in many countries, example- India, Bangladesh, Malaysia sweatshops lacking reform despite ECOSOC efforts Topic 1: The “El Niño” Phenomenon and its Impact on Agricultural Production Topic 2: Addressing Global Wealth Inequality

UNDP (UN Development Programme)

The leading humanitarian and development agency working globally for the rights of every child. Provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. UNICEF also lobbies and partners with leaders, thinkers and policy makers to help all children realize their rights—especially the most disadvantaged. UNODC (UN Office on Drugs and Crime)

UNSC (UN Security Council)
The primary peacekeeping force within the UN and is charged with maintaining international security. the Security Council has the unique capability to issue sanctions and to authorize military action. The Security Council often creates subsidiary committees to enforce varying resolutions. UNSC is made up of fifteen members, five are permanent and ten of rotate biennially. Permanent members : France, United Kingdom, The United States, China, and Russia.
