2 Overview Definition Types of Media Damage Today’s Data Recovery
Recovery Methods Prevention Summary Sources Questions

3 Definition Data recovery is the process of salvaging data from damaged, corrupted, wrecked or inaccessible primary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally. Often the data is being salvaged from storage media formats such as hard disk drive, storage tapes, CDs, DVDs, RAID, and other electronics. Although there is some confusion as to the term, data recovery can also be the process of recovering deleted information from a storage media for forensic purposes.

4 Types of Media Damage Logical Physical Human Error

5 Logical Damage Most Common Cause of damage
Prevention of the file system structures from being completely written to the storage medium Power Outages System Crashes

6 Solutions for Logical Damage
Use the operating systems’ utilities Windows - chkdsk Linux - fsck Mac OS X - Disk Utility Recovery software

7 Physical Damage Physically Damaged Acts of Nature Some data loss
Water Fire Some data loss May cause logical damage

8 Solutions for Physical Damage
End user should not try to fix Could cause further damage Do not have the expertise Give to a data recovery company Cleanrooms Reconstruct the usable data after any logical repairs

12 Human Error Deleting items by accident Physically damaging media

13 Solutions for Human Error
Recovery software Give the media to a data recovery company

14 Today’s Technical Challenges and Recovery Techniques
Ontrack Data Recovery Mechanical problems more difficult do to smaller drives and increased media capacity Same techniques, New techniques

21 In-Lab Services The most severe and complex data loss situations
Use of a cleanroom Expertise

22 Down Side to In-Lab Services
Expensive $1,000 per hard drive Have to give or send media to the data recovery company

23 Remote Data Recovery Performs lab quality recovery right on your desktop or laptop in as little as one hour through a modem or Internet connection A secured connection by using a proprietary communication protocol, encrypted packets, and safe facilities Recovered data is restored to your system or copied to a new destination and is accessible upon completion

24 Up Side to Remote Data Recovery
Quick, Convenient, and Cost Effective Do not have to send media to the data recovery company

25 Prevention Make Backups Regularly Test Backups Periodically
Store Backups in an Offsite Location Monitor Your Computer’s Health Consider Data Recovery
