Non-Linear Editing (NLE)
All modern video editing applications are NLEs Any part of a sequence can be edited in any order NLEs are non-destructive: all source media files remain un-changed and in their original location on a computer Edited clips created by NLEs are just pointer or reference files that reference the original source media

Media Management ….Get Organised!
Always back up SD cards before editing When backing up AVCHD, copy all contents of card (or the ‘Private’ folder), NOT just the mts video files Import footage from backup – or copy of backup – never from the SD card Create a dedicated folder system in which to contain all your media and project files If possible use a fast external hard-drive for editing
5
AVCHD Video Many camcorders record AVCHD video
This video cannot be played back directly from the card, or backup of the card, on the computer, it must be ingested into an NLE
6
External HD for video Using a fast, large capacity external HD is better because video files are very large and editing them requires fast read and write speeds to cope with the amount of data Avoid using your computer's HD if possible as this is designed for running the OS and applications. It’s best not to clog it up with video.
7
Video Editing Workflow
Organise / manage media Import into NLE Mark clips – create sub-clips etc Build the story – make a rough cut Trimming Add text / transitions / effects Audio – editing, mixing etc Colour Correction Export
