7 Reality of youth growing up in today’s world
Sociological reality of religious practice in UK - S. Bruce 2015 Parenting, Technology, Impatience, Environment - Simon Sinek, ‘Millenials’ – December 2016 Lower self-esteem, reliance on/imbalance of social media, lack of coping mechanisms, no Apps for relationships! Responsibility for adults to address the ‘gaps’ Authenticity (Joseph Heinrich, 2009), ‘Persons of Reference’ – close-by, credible, consistent & honest (Youth Synod 2017) love, joy, skill development – require patience, long journey (addictive in adolescence (Dopamine), misperception of how people handle life, peer approval), unable to form deep & meaningful relationships,

8 10 qualities youth ministry doesn’t need
A precise size – no relationship between church size and effectiveness A trendy location or region An exact age A popular denomination…or lack of denomination – God works powerfully through all An off-the-charts cool quotient – today relational warmth is the new cool A big, modern building – for teenagers feeling at home transcends any building. A big budget A ‘contemporary’ worship service ‘Watered down’ teaching A hyper-entertaining ministry programme – no need for competition, faith communities offer something different

9 Growing Young – helping young people discover and love the church (Powell, Mulder, Griffin)
Unlock Unlock keychain leadership Empathise Empathise with today’s young people Jesus Take Jesus’ message seriously Fuel Fuel a warm community Prioritise Prioritise young people and families Be Be the best neighbours
