1
Variables Symbols used to represent unknown numbers or values.
Any letter of the alphabet can be used as a variable.
2
Algebraic expression Definition: contains one or more numbers and variables and one or more operations. Addition - sum symbol: + Subtraction – difference symbol: - Multiplication – product symbol: ● or ( ) Division - quotient symbol: /
3
Operations and words that represent them:
Addition: add, sum, more than, greater, increased.... Subtraction: subtract, difference, less, less than, decreased .... Multiplication: multiply, product, times, twice(2 times).... Division: divide, quotient, over, ratio....
4
Algebraic Expressions Examples:
5x means 5 times x 3x-7 means 7 less than 3 times x 4+ p q means 4 more than the quotient of p and q
5
Algebraic Expressions
When multiplying a number times a variable or a variable times a variable you do not use a symbol. Examples: a times b is shown as ab 4 times x is shown as 4x, the number must always go in front of the variable. X times 8 is shown as 8x
6
WHAT NUMBER IS 5 LESS THAN 50?
7
IF IT CONTAINS LESS THAN YOU MUST REVERSE THE ORDER OF THE TERMS.
WHEN WRITING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS ALWAYS WRITE THEM AS YOU READ THEM (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT) EXCEPT WHEN IT CONTAINS LESS THAN. IF IT CONTAINS LESS THAN YOU MUST REVERSE THE ORDER OF THE TERMS.
8
Exponent or Power Definition: tells how many times a number or variable is used as a factor when multiplying. Ex: 32 is read three to the second power or 3 squared and means 3 times 3. Ex: 43 is read four to the third power or 4 cubed and means 4 times 4 times 4
9
POWERS ON THE CALCULATOR
WHEN TYPING POWERS INTO THE CALCULATOR YOU MUST PUT THE NUMBER INSIDE ( ) AND THE POWER OUTSIDE THE ( ). IF THE EXPONENT IS 2 USE THE x2 KEY. IF THE EXPONENT IS NOT 2 USE THE ROOFTOP OR KARAT KEY ^
10
Evaluate Definition: means to find its value by replacing the variables with given numbers EXAMPLE: Evaluate: 3x + 2y when x = 2 and y = 5 3 ● ● 5 16
11
Verbal expressions Definition: algebraic expressions that are written using words. Example: 2x + 4 can be written in words as: four more than twice an unknown number, x
