Exponent Properties Product of Powers: 23 ● 22 = 23+2 = 25
If like bases are being multiplied they can be combined by adding their exponents. Power of a power : (23)2 = 23●2 = 26 If a single base is raised to an exponent and then raised to another exponent it can be simplified by multiplying the exponents. Power of Product: (3x)3 = 33 ● x3 If multiple bases are being multiplied together and then raised to an exponent it can be simplified by multiplying each exponent of each base by the raised exponent. (This does not work if there is a + or – between bases.

Exponent Properties Negative Exponent: 2-3 = 1/23
A negative exponent can be simplified by raising the reciprocal to the positive exponent. Zero Exponent: 20 = 1 Anything raised to a 0 exponent has a value of 1 Quotient of powers: 23 / 22 = 23 – 2 = 21 If like bases are being divided they can be combined by subtracting their exponents. Power of a Quotient : (2/3)2 = 22 / 32 Any bases being divided raised to an exponent can be simplified by multiplying all the bases exponents by the raised exponent.
