Using Case Studies in Online & Blended Classes (Especially Science Courses) David Allard Texas A&M University-Texarkana
2
What is a case study? A case study is an in-depth study of one person, group or event.
3
Using Case studies. Have a long history in business, law, and medical education. Their use in science education, however, is relatively recent. Have been found to be a powerful pedagogical technique for teaching science. Cases can be used not only to teach scientific concepts and content, but also process skills and critical thinking. Since many of the best cases are based on contemporary, and often contentious, science problems that students encounter in the news, the use of cases in the classroom makes science relevant.

Where to find them. National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science

Characteristics of a good case.
tells a story. focuses on an interest-arousing issue. can be set in the past five years, or where appropriate, could be an important historical case. creates empathy or may touch on ethical or societal aspects related to the issue at hand. is relevant to the reader. must have pedagogic utility. could be conflict provoking. . progressively leads to decision-making. has generality. is short. learning/effective-classroom-practices/case-studies/sciences

Types of Case Studies Analysis (Issues) Cases Historical Cases
(What happened?) Contemporary Cases E.g. Katrina disaster Lead paint in toys Historical Cases Galileo at the Inquisition Tuskegee Syphilis Project Dilemma (Decision) Cases (What happened and what do we do about it?) Physician's diagnosis & treatment of a patient Teacher's problem with cheating in class Farmer deciding to use genetically modified seeds

How to write a case study.
Start with a story Research What principles are involved? What teaching methods will you use? What materials will be give out? What product will the students produce? What assessment methods will you use? Teach case Revise

Teams 3 or 4 students per team I assign the teams
Try to have mixed ability Turn in written work via turnitin Could also be powerpoint, video, infographic etc. Grade content (80%) and teamwork (20%)

Grading Teamwork This is an opportunity to evaluate the contributions of your teammates to the group project. Please give them the scores that you believe they earned. You don't give yourself points. (If you are in a group of four, you'll have 30 to give away. If everyone in the group feels the same way, you all will receive an average of 10 points. Be fair in your assessments, but if someone in your group didn't contribute adequately, give them fewer points. If someone worked harder than the rest, give that person more than 10 points. There are some rules that you must observe in assigning points: • You cannot give anyone in your group more than 15 points. • You do not have to assign all of your points. • Don't give anyone a grade that they don't deserve. • Only rate your group You must score an average of 8 on this assessment in order to receive credit for any teamwork assignments. The point value is a drop down menu where you select the points to give. Click the done button at the bottom when finished. You must complete this assessment in order to receive a grade for the team assignments.
