Leadership and Self-Awareness
Study conducted in 2010 by Green Peak Partners and Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The study examined 72 executives at public and private companies with revenues from $50 million to $5 billion. “Leadership searches give short shrift to ‘self-awareness,’ which should actually be a top criterion for dealing with change. Interestingly, a high self-awareness score was the strongest predictor of overall success.” HBR ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.

Self Awareness: As defined by Daniel Goleman(author, Emotional Intelligence) Self-awareness means the ability to monitor our inner world – our thoughts and feelings. ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.

Awareness Exercise: How do you currently deal with Change?
What is your reaction to change? What do you do as a result? What behaviors do you take on? How does it affect others around you? How would you like to react? ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.
11
Creating Self Awareness for Dealing With Change: Exploring Beliefs Behind Your Reactive Actions or Tendencies 1. Name a change event that activates(activated) your reactive tendency or emotion. 2. What did you say to yourself when that happened. 3. Get the felt sense in your body. 4. What meaning did you give it? (“Oh now I can’t….,” or “ Now I have to ….”) 5. If that were true… “What would be at risk for you?” or “Why is that a problem?” Keep going until you hit rock bottom. Ask: “Is this really true?” 6. Observer: What assumptions, stories and beliefs are present that are causing them to conclude this? Is it really true? ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.
12
What are the assumptions or beliefs you came up with?
Examples: Failure=Death My leaders are toxic His response means he doesn’t care. Are these true? How do you know? ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.

So the question becomes —
What intentional activities can we initiate to create more awareness and ultimately more inner peace to have the highest ROI(i.e. happiness) no matter what the outside influences. ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.

Ex. #2: A Release Technique
People want three things: 1- Control (over their work, employees, schedule, life) 2-Security(knowing what will happen, job security, money) 3- Approval(belonging, their work being appreciated, included) When they don’t get it or don’t get it to their satisfaction unacceptable behaviors arise ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.
15
Implementation: FFORR Yourself
1. Welcome whatever the pain/upset is.(Find it) 2. Feel where it is.(Feel) 3. Say “ Yes” or “Allow” into the space. If there is resistance say yes to the resistance. (Open) 4. Give it time to release (Release) 5. Rewire the experience (Rewire) ©2017 Pivotal Point Training & Consulting Inc.
