Warm up: (5 min) Take a few minutes to think about and identify the important characteristics and qualities of a leader. Write a list of at least three (3) that you will be able justify and discuss with a partner. Be prepared to explain with examples and definitions

Were the qualities strongly justified? Reflect on the two lists and pick three of the strongest entries

Create a class list of qualities for good leadership Now that we have discussed the qualities of a leader, are there any that you possess?

Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.

Building on ideas Now that we have discussed some of the qualities of leadership and Emotional Intelligence, how do you think those two things combine (for success)?

Apply! If I was to give you an example of a leader/manager and how they run a business meeting, could you apply the things we just learned to determine if this leader is emotionally intelligent?

On your own… Review the summary of the video (you can also watch the segments using the time provided) and match them to the elements of EI/EQ based on our earlier discussions. Be sure to justify your match and explain the connection to the meeting technique and the element of EI/EQ.

What do you think? Many know Steve Jobs as an incredible entrepreneur who successfully ran Apple Computer. After seeing the video and matching the items (if there were any matches) did Steve Jobs have exceptional Emotional Intelligence? Pick a stance and use an evidence based approach to justify it. (“Steve Jobs did/did not have a high emotional intelligence…”)

Did you get it? Who in our world today would you consider a leader with a high EI/EQ? Take the information from what we have learned today and apply it to the actions, words and behaviors of someone you know, or someone with whom you are very familiar and provide evidence to support why they have a high EI/EQ.

How will emotional intelligence contribute to your success at work? Reflect on the strengths YOU have and what you would need to work on in order to better develop your EI/EQ.

Extension/Homework Select one of the following links and take one of the tests to determine your EI. You may take more than one. Summarize the results and be prepared to share them next class.
