natural Gas Beyond Transition Fuel
Environmental Exchange Lunchtime Dialogues 25 July 2017
2
Natural Gas In Australia
Natural Gas plays an important role in supporting Australia economy and Australian’s modern lifestyles Provide energy to 6.5 million households and support 949,000 jobs Natural Gas provides 44% of household energy and only 13% of household green gas emissions During winter period, Natural Gas supplies more than 50% of the energy to ACT households
3
Natural Gas In Australia
Natural Gas plays an important role in supporting Australia economy and Australian’s modern lifestyles Australia’s Natural Gas Infrastructure can store the same amount of energy as 6 billion Tesla Powerwall batteries Infrastructure that already exists and is paid for by Australians Natural gas is an essential material for creating products such as fertilisers, plastics and chemicals
4
Zero Net Emissions Targets
ActewAGL fully support the drive to achieve Zero Net Emissions Targets and Carbon Neutrality Natural Gas can play a central role beyond transition fuel The Energy Trilemma Balancing Security – Carbon Reduction – Cost
5
Zero Net Emissions Targets
Zero Net Emissions Mission should: Not compromise safety, security and affordability Provide consumer with real choice and encourage competition Utilisation of existing resources Be technology neutral Support innovation, ongoing R&D and a diverse range of low emission technologies Continue to provide gas energy to those commercial and industrial that need gas
6
ACTEWAGL Vision FOR GAS
ActewAGL’s vision is to turn its Natural Gas resources into products and services that will continue to enhance national prosperity while achieving carbon neutrality Three transformation technologies, already available now, to deliver zero emissions: 1. BioGas Production – turn waste into bio- methane and bio-propane 2. Hydrogen – Integration of gas and hydrogen as a clean burning fuel 3. Carbon Capture and Storage – CO2 separated, transported and stored in suitable geological formation
7
Key Messages Natural Gas Infrastructure in Australia is equivalent to 6 billion Tesla Powerwall batteries that is already exist and paid for by Australians The energy sector faces the challenge of cutting greenhouse emissions without compromising SAFETY – SECURITY – AFFORDABILITY Natural Gas has made the largest contribution over the last 10 years to reduction in greenhouse gas emissions replacing coal fire energy.

Key Messages Natural Gas can continue to play a central role, beyond transition fuel, in achieving Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions Targets ActewAGL vision is to turn its gas resources into services that will enhance national prosperity while achieving carbon neutrality. Three key already available transformation technologies are being considered: 1. BioGas 2. Hydrogen 3. Carbon Capture and Storage
