Nathaniel Hawthorne: A History
Born in 1804. His ancestor, John Hathorne was one of the judges in the Salem Witch Trials. Nathaniel changed his name from Hathorne to Hawthorne to distance himself from the family. Attended Bowdoin College. Married Sophia on July 9, 1842. Died on May 19, 1864.

Dark Romanticism Literary subgenre that emerged from Transcendentalism. Less optimistic than Transcendentalists works. Not confident that perfection is an intimate quality of mankind. Natural world is dark and decaying. Some relation to Gothic fiction.
