Lighting prescriptions for staff, patients and society
When the unthinkable happens they are there for us. Those who save lives and care for others. God knows it's not easy. Medical decisions must be made in an instant. Sampling, medication and management of advanced technology requires concentration. Administration and record-keeping demands constant attention. At the same time, they shall have time, and energy, to be fellow human beings. This goes on day and night, around the clock, year in and year out. And it is stressful, both professionally and emotionally. Therefore deserve everyday heroes in care the best possible light available. Fagerhult.

Lighting in health care environments
Light is important in work, healing and life. Sleep is important for well being and the light controls our circadian rhythm. Light make us feel better and facilitates the healing process Daylight reduces pain and minimizes the need for drugs. Light reduces depression and shortens hospitalization. Right light levels reduce the risk of errors in medication. Well lit applications improve care and save money for the society. This text is from the brochure and shall be a support if questions are raised where the foundings come from Light is a powerful source of energy in work, healing and life. We human beings are just like flowers which turn towards the sun. Research shows that natural light plays a big role in the work and well-being of healthcare professionals - and the patient's recovery. Well lit healthcare environments can prevent much suffering but also save a lot of money to society. The important balance between darkness and light Our biological circadian rhythm controls our alternation between sleep and wakefulness, and is primarily controlled by light. The human circadian rhythm is approximately 24 hours, and to keep this rhythm undisturbed, it is important that the balance between light and darkness, sleep and wakefulness is maintained. When exposed to constant light or darkness our rhythm is disturbed, and this is what happens when, for example, we work shift or travel across time zones. More alert staff and faster healing Several international studies conducted in health care shows that increased levels of natural light gives a more positive work environment and makes the nursing staff feel better.1 Other research says that nurses residing in daylight at least three hours per day feel less stressed than others who are not exposed to as much daylight .2 The availability of daylight in the morning hours, and day and night light cycles are key factors for circadian rhythms. For health care professionals who work day shift light can therefore contribute to increased alertness and better sleep quality during night.3 In the same way, a disturbed circadian rhythm affects both patient comfort and recovery. Lack of sleep stresses the patient, weakens the immune system and can lead to respiratory problems and disturbances in body temperature. This will of course affect healing and prolong the hospitalisation.4 Suppresses depression and shorten length of stay Research has shown that light, daylight or bright artificial light, suppresses depression. Research results also says that light therapy is effective and that it may in some cases correspond to the results that you get with antidepressants drugs. 5 Other studies have found that depressed patients recover better in rooms with more daylight.6 Reduced pain and consumption of analgesics Patients experience less pain if the patient rooms have good access to daylight. This also reduces the need for pain relief. A study carried out with surgical patients compared patients in areas with a higher degree of natural light with patients who had rooms on the shadow side of the same building. Patients who got more daylight experienced less pain and lower stress levels. In addition, they spent 22 percent less painkillers. Something that reduced drug costs in a corresponding degree. 7 Lower risk of inaccurate dosing A good working light is important for all professions, but the managing of advanced technology and medicine sets increased requirements in healthcare. A study of hospital pharmacies shows that the risk of incorrect mixing ratio was 37 percent higher at light levels from 450 to 1000 lux on the working surfaces. When the light level was increased to 1500 lux the pharmacists made far fewer mistakes. 8. Sources. A large part of the information is taken from a Swedish report “The good ward”, a final report from Program for technical standard (PTS Forum) and the Centre for healthcare architecture, Chalmers Verderber and Reuman, 1987, Mrockzek et al., 2005, Alimoglu och Donmez, Rhea, Wallace et al., Krachman et al., 1995; Parthasarathy and Tobin, Golden et al., Beauchemin and Hays, 1996; 1998; Benedetti et al., Walch et al., Buchanan et al., 1991.

When a patient enters the hospital in a serious condition the level and quality of light is crucial to assess, within seconds, the immediate treatment required For staff, it is important that the light levels are good, so that one see what you have in front of them in the corridor Vidi corridor lighting with indirect light distribution on the walls and ceiling. Wall luminaire Wallwing for additional vertical light and guidance on the opposite wall.
6
Is the patient in critical condition?
What is the colour and tone of the patient’s skin? How are the eyes reacting? Is the patient in critical condition? These are questions that need to be answered in seconds. What if the lighting colour quality is poor? The staff may lose critical seconds having to second guess their decisions due to poor lighting and heightened stress. Vidi corridor lighting with indirect light distribution on the walls and ceiling. Wall luminaire Wallwing for additional vertical light and guidance on the opposite wall.
7
To minimise discomfort from glare and strobe like effects install the luminaires against the wall
This eliminates the dazzling strobe light effect patients will see as they are being rushed down the corridor on a trolley Instead they are greeted with a smooth, consistent, indirect light.

Lighting patient rooms
16
Patient room with Eira Depending on the type of clinic the light for investigation must be between 500–1000 lux on the bed A patient room is very complex from the lighting point of view. First of all it is a workplace where staff need adequate light to investigate, treat, medicate and keep records. On the other hand, the patient needs a calm and stress-free environment that feels safe and caring. By combining several types of light - general light, examination light, ambient and reading light – one can create the best conditions. Preset levels for examination and rest make it easy for the staff to control the light. Thus, caring work can be carried out professionally, and moments with higher, and for the patient disturbing, light levels can be limited. Depending on the type of clinic the light for investigation must be 500–1000 lux on the bed. The situation also requires a good ambient light, light that illuminates the walls and ceiling. The light reflected vertically from the wall increases the pupil light intake and keep the staff fresh and alert, without glare.
