Aim: How is a food chain different than a food web?
Objectives Learn how a food chain is different from a food web. Learn how to create a food chain and food web. Learn how to analyze the interdependence of one organism to another.
2
Life in an ecosystem requires a source of energy.
3
Food Chains and Food Webs are similar because they both
model the flow of energy in an ecosystem.
4
However, food chains are simple!!
A food chain is a simplified way to look at the energy that passes from producers to consumers. Because we know each predator does not eat only 1 type of prey.
6
What is a Food Web? A more realistic way of looking at the relationship of plants and animals in an environment Several food chains linked together A predator from one food chain may be linked to the prey of another food chain
7
Food Webs are more realistic and more complicated
Food Webs are more realistic and more complicated notice all the different arrows
8
Food Webs are realistic because predators eat more than 1 type of prey.
9
Lesson Summary Questions
What does all life in an ecosystem require? How is a food chain and a food web similar? How is a food chain different than a food web? What is another name for producer? What are consumers also called?

Let’s Check for Understanding Regents Based Questions
1. The diagrams represent four members of a food chain. Which sequence best represents the transfer of energy between these organisms? toads – predaceous insects – herbivorous insects – plants predaceous insects – herbivorous insects – plants – toads plants – herbivorous insects – predaceous insects – toads plants – herbivorous insects – toads – predaceous insects

2. Which sequence shows a correct pathway for the flow of energy in a food chain? bacteria – grass – fox – owl grass – grasshopper – frog – snake fungi – beetle – algae – mouse algae – snake – duck – deer

Let’s Check for Understanding Regents Based Questions
3. A food web is more stable than a food chain because a food web transfers all of the producer energy to herbivores reduces the number of niches in the ecosystem includes alternative pathways for energy flow includes more consumers than producers

4. Which type of model provides the most complete representation of the feeding relationships within a community? a material cycle a predator-prey association a food chain a food web

Analyzing Changes to the Food Chain
Each situation describes a change in a food chain environment. In complete sentences describe how the changes will affect the organisms in each food chain. Support your answers with specific details
