What is a Pharmacy technician?
A Pharmacy Technician, sometimes known as a pharmaceutical technician, is a health care provider who performs pharmacy-related functions, generally working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

What is a Technician Trainee?
Definition of Pharmacy Technician Trainee: An individual who is registered with the board as a pharmacy technician trainee and is authorized to participate in a pharmacy's technician training program. In order to become Pharmacy Technician in Training you must register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and be fingerprinted to check for criminal record.

Texas State Board of Pharmacy
Registration fee for technician trainee ( ) $ 62.00 Fee for fingerprints ( ) $ 41.45 Can I register without a Social Security Number? Disclosure of a Social Security Number (SSN) is mandatory under the Texas Family Code, § If an applicant does not have a SSN, they will be unable to register with the Board. (Students can register with PTCB to take the exam by entering zeros in the social security slot however they cannot register as technicians in training or become registered technicians without a social security number.

Certification Exam (PTCE)
If a student does not have a social security number they may apply for certification by entering zero’s and be eligible to take the PTCB Exam but keep in mind that depending on their form of ID they might not be allowed to sit for the exam at Pearson Vue. You can obtain more on valid forms of identification at Students must have graduated from High School and received their diploma. If the high school diplomas have a specific date you must wait until after the date specified in order to apply for certification

PTCB® offers the CPhT certification to individuals who wish to distinguish themselves in the pharmacy technician field. PTCB’s certification program enables technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. Most employers prefer, and many require, that their pharmacy technicians be CPhTs. New credentials. Example: your name, CPhT

Licensure Upon completion of the program and passing the PTCE certification exam, the student will be eligible for licensure by the state board as a Pharmacy Technician.

Additional Certification
Sterile Products IV Technician Certification This 2nd certification allows you a National Certification for employment in the hospital pharmacy.

Sterile IV CERTIFICATION
Fee of $250 for the booklet and testing. Tested at home campus during the spring. Maybe on a Saturday. If you wait till a practicing technician the cost becomes >$800.

NABP Students can create a NABP profile at to keep track of their continuing education by creating an e-profile on the upper right hand corner. If the student does not have a social security number please look on Kaduceus website under general files for the appropriate form to be notarized and faxed to NABP by the student. If the students are IV testing you must have their NABP number by the date of your IV test.

Externship GHS is working on possible externships in the spring for pharmacy technician students. Students with any kind of felony will not be allowed an externship. A drug test may be required.

Total Fees 1. Fees for technician in training (2016-2017) $62.00

Sterile IV Certification $250 (if want to practice in hospital) Fees for Pharmacy Technician Licensure $99.00 Total Cost- $ Pending district funding, some of these fees may be picked up by the district. Some scholarships will be available Student must be in good academic standing in order to receive funds for examination.
