TexPREP at UTA Texas PreFreshman Engineering Program – TexPREP
Started at The University of Texas at Arlington in 1995 Located in the Mathematics Department, College of Science, led by Dr. Roger Kirby In Summer 2014 Moved to Dean of Science office, directed by Dr. Minerva Cordero and Alice Lubbe Partnered with Arlington ISD In Summer Added Year II Moved to College of Engineering, led by Dr. Carter Tiernan and Shaunyale Canada In Summer Added Year III In Summer Added Year IV

TexPREP Mission The Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) provides a challenging academic program designed to motivate and prepare middle and high school students for success in advanced studies leading to careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields. PREP-USA is a national program with an emphasis on increasing the number of women and underrepresented minorities in these fields.

Schedule of TexPREP camp
TexPrep UTA schedule will be five days a week, Monday through Friday, starting Mon., June 12 and ending Fri., July 21 with a two day break on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4.

TexPREP Grading and Credit
Students must maintain a 75 average or better during the program. Attendance is mandatory and poor attendance can cause dismissal from the program. Students are allowed a maximum of 3 (three) excused absences during the program. Students will have homework. If requested by the parent, a TexPREP student’s final grade can be reported to a school.

TexPREP Rules Unsafe or inappropriate behavior is immediate grounds for dismissal from PREP. We have zero tolerance for it. Dress code Student IDs Cell phones and other electronic devices

TexPREP Camp Rules Promptly follow all instructions given by any Instructor, EVERY camp staff member, and the Program Director Dr. Tiernan Do not leave any place without your assigned group. Always get permission from your Instructor or group leader to go anywhere (including the bathroom) and inform the group leader of your return. Always consult your Instructor or group leader immediately if you have any problem. Always follow the classroom rules for your instructors.

Camp Health Rules Cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze.
Wash your hands and/or use hand sanitizer after eating, coughing, sneezing, or visiting the restroom. Inform your group leader immediately if you do not feel well. Before the start of camp, please inform the Camp Coordinator if you take any regularly scheduled medication. Camp staff members cannot give medication but they can assist in reminding students if scheduled medications are needed.

Camp Lunch All students will receive lunch and a snack daily.
Students are free to bring their own lunches. A menu for the summer will be provided to students on the first day of camp. On designated days, students may be able to purchase lunch from the University Center. Families will be notified of these days.

Bus numbers may not be the same each day.

Drop off and pick up location
Early wait area For students not riding buses. Students must be dropped off and picked up INSIDE the parking lot. They may not be picked up from the street. This is a safety issue. Drivers waiting on campers should be courteous regarding UTA students looking for parking places in Lot 36. Please do not block the drives in the parking lot. If you arrive early, please stay in the north end of the lot by Abrams until the campers come out. Parking lot entrance

Morning Arrival Process
Car drop off – Students being dropped off by car must be dropped off in parking lot 36 on the north side of UTA Blvd. across from the Engineering Research Building no earlier than 8am. Students will be met by a camp staff member in the parking lot. Students will cross at the cross walk then they will be checked in by camp staff at the breezeway under the ERB. Camp staff will take the campers in groups to NH 100 from there. No student may be dropped off in the street. Street drop off will count as an unexcused absence for the student. All drop offs must be made in the parking lot. Please contact us about early or late drop off. Bus riders – AISD buses will drop students off at the corner of College and 1st St where they will be met by camp staff member who will check them in. Each student must check in as they get off the bus. Staff will take the campers in groups to NH 100 from there.

Afternoon Departure Process
Car pick up – Students being picked up by car must be picked up in parking lot 36 on the north side of UTA Blvd. across from the ERB no later than 4:15pm. Students will be brought by camp staff members to the ERB breezeway to wait for their ride. When they identify their pick up, the student must check out with the camp staff under the breezeway and then be accompanied by a camp staffer through the cross walk to the parking lot for pick up. No student may be picked up in the street. Street pick up will count as an unexcused absence for the student. All pick ups must be made in the parking lot. Please contact us if you will be late picking up your student. Bus riders – AISD buses will pick up students from the faculty/staff parking lot off of College St. Camp staff members will accompany them to the buses and will check them out as they get on the bus. Each student must check out as they get on the bus.

Closing Ceremony for TexPREP 2017 at UTA
On July 21st, we will have a closing ceremony for TexPREP for this year. Your student will receive details about this event during the camp. We invite you to come join us for this celebration.

Next summer TexPREP 2018 at UTA
Invitations to participate in the following year of TexPREP will automatically be mailed out to those qualifying Year I,II and III TexPREP students. UTA Engineering will host all four years of TexPREP in 2018. Notify the UTA Engineering TexPREP Camp Coordinator if you have a change in address or telephone number or if you do not receive a following year application by March

Reminders If you have any uncompleted paperwork, please turn it in immediately at the sign in table. Students with uncompleted paperwork will not be able to start the TexPREP camp. If your student is not riding the bus to camp, please be sure to drop them off and pick them up in accordance with TexPREP hours. All students will need to be checked in and out of camp by a TexPREP staff member each day. The sign in table has reminder information about where to drop off and pick up students. Every day, encourage your child to complete their homework during research and study time to avoid excessive homework at night.
