5. Course Description The major purpose of this course is to provide a balanced language arts program that will provide a variety of activities that will enable students to improve listening, speaking, thinking and writing skills. Additionally, this course will aid the students in preparation for standardized testing required by the district and state.

6. Grading Criteria Grading Scale Honors English 9 &10 90 – 100% = A
80 – 89% = B
68 – 79% = C
60 – 69% = D
Extra Credit
A finite amount of extra credit will be offered throughout the year. The methods of earning extra credit will be determined by Coach Dobra.

7. Classroom Expectations

8. Formal Writing Assignments In this class, success on any formal paragraph or essay is critical because of its high point value. A sincere, diligent effort must be made by each student. A rubric for all writing assignments will be furnished by Coach Dobra.

Review for tests/quizzes
Retake of a test or quiz when appropriate
Revision and resubmission of assignments
Incorporate Co-operative Learning
Recommend one-on-one tutor
Incorporate peer tutoring in class
Offer accommodations and/or modifications

10. SPHS Attendance Policy
A. A maximum of 7 full day absences/28 TOTAL class period absences are allowed during the current school year.
B. At the 8th full day absence and/or 29th class period absence, FOR ANY REASON, the student’s name will appear on the Non-Participation STOP CLEARANCE LIST.

11. Novels/Plays Non-fiction/Accelerated Reader
Any assigned reading must be read in a timely manner. Quizzes, tests and/or written responses relating to reading will be assigned. These assessments often have an above-average are large point total, so they are key to academic success.

12. Pirate Health & Fitness
Focus on health, nutrition, managing and providing medical and therapy services, and health information.
Explore careers in Sports medicine, Sports management, and athletic training. Careers in Health sciences, nursing, and physical therapy.
Possible Electives:
Anatomy and Physiology, Body Dynamics, Sports Therapy, Nutrition, First Aid and Emergency care, Physical therapy aide
