What is the issue? Child labour is work that hurts children or keeps them away from attending school Child labour often refers to work that is physically or mentally harmful to children

Who is doing it? Children under the age of 12 are the typical victims of child labour These children are most often employed by their own parents Other employers include the mining industry, farmers, factories including clothing and shoe manufacturers

Who does it affect? Child labour affects children under the age of 12 in many countries around the world It also affects governments and organizations that are trying to put a stop to child labour

How the organizations are helping?
Most organizations are helping by donating food, clothes, and money

Where is it happening? Unfortunately, many countries in the world still have child labour to this day Most common countries that have child labour are India, Bangladesh, Philippines, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Ethiopia, North Korea and Yemen. South America still has a high rate of child labour

When did it start? Child labour was going on since the beginning of time Child labour outside the home increased when the Industrial Revolution started in the 18th century

When did it become recognized as a world issue/human rights issue?
It first became recognized as a world issue/human rights issue by social reformers in the 1800’s

Why did it start? It started because parents affected by poverty needed their kids to work to earn money for the family The money that was earned would be spent on basic necessities such as clothes, food, and supplies for cleaning

Why are people doing it? The children were put to work because parents had to spend money on their children and if the children worked they could help the family pay for necessities Child labour also exists because there aren’t enough adults filling jobs Business owners use children for labour because it keeps the costs of wages low

How is Canada helping? Canada helped by signing the Declaration of Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work in 2000 They are also helping by being one of many countries to have a law against child labour

How is the Catholic Church helping?
The Catholic Church is helping by speaking up against child soldiery and child labour in general The Catholic Church is also helping by paying for the education of some child labourers Unfortunately there are some reports on some Catholic Churches having businesses employing children
