CEPT Workshop on 5G Mobile Communications BNetzA, Mainz, Germany
Session E: New applications – new requirements for M2M: Home Automation: DECT and ULE Daniel Hartnett: DECT Forum Business Development Director
2
Agenda Who are the DECT Forum. World Map, Adoption.
DECT/ULE: Complementing 5G Typical Challenges of Home Automation in the context of 5G DECT /ULE addressing those challenges Key Benefits DECT / ULE Bundling Voice and Smart Home services Importance of infrastructure / Certification The changing face of DECT: moving beyond telephony
3
Who is the DECT Forum The DECT Forum is the international association of the wireless home and enterprise communication industry. DECT, DECT 6.0, J-DECT (Japan), DECT Security and CAT-iq are worldwide-adopted technologies with high relevance for wireless voice, broadband home and enterprise communication.
4
DECT World Map
5
Market Adoption More than one billion DECT, DECT 6.0, J-DECT, DECT Security and CAT-iq devices have been sold worldwide, which continues to increase by over 100 million products per year. The DECT Forum has currently 50+ members and is located in Bern, Switzerland.
6
Typical Challenges of Home Automation in the context of 5G
Mission critical data transport (smoke, gas, flood) Adequate bandwidth kb/s to Mb/s long range: Very low latency (No)Interference Vital signs data transmission (healthcare, wearables) Battery life for low powered applications > 10 years Voice transmission Secure(encrypted) Achieving large scale deployment with RoI
7
Addressing the challenges of 5G: Key Benefits DECT / ULE
Mission Critical: high reliability profits from unique dynamic channel selection affording no system down time Bandwidth: Up to 1 Mbps with 12 Duplex channels Range: up to 70 M indoor(walls etc), up to 500M outdoor Latency: <10ms and down to 1ms for fast response times in critical applications Interference: Uncluttered spectrum eliminates interference Low Power:Battery Life>10 years for coin battery. Overall power budget is more than just the node Voice: Voice competence is a key element of IoT. Voice control vital for future Smart Home. Secure: 128 Bit encryption and higher for voice and data applications IoP: DECT security, CAT-iq and ULE all use certification to gaurantee IoP
8
DECT: A perfect complement to 5G
DECT is not just a radio. Transport layer, data layer, application layer are all part of our ETSI standard. Standardized, Interoperable, Certified. A perfect complement to 5G
9
Going to market: Large scale smart home deployments are using the home gateway
10
Achieiving large scale deployment with RoI
Leveraging gateway infrastructure for Voice, Data, and Smart Home 50 million DECT enabled gateway deliver voice services such as HD Voice, Multiple Lines, 3-party conferencing, shared phonebook For Smart Home: Only a simple firmware Upgrade of the same Home Gateway needed to enable smart home services No additional GW No additional Power budget for mesh repeaters Large Eco System of ULE sensors
11
Certification: Interoperability promotes competition
Certification is a key aspect of developing new markets. Ensuring Interoperabilty Identifying specified functionality across a range of products Ensuring quality standards Giving service providers a large choice of vendors enabling healthy competition DECT Forum and ULEA certification programs
