10 COMMON APP PROMPTS 1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? 18 UC APPLICATIONS How does UC calculate the GPA of a high school applicant who is a California resident? In calculating the GPA for admission consideration, UC uses all UC- approved “a-g” courses a student took between the summer before 10th grade through the summer following 11th grade. Additionally, UC will grant up to eight semesters (with no more than four semesters coming from 10th grade) of honors weight for grades of C or better in AP, IB, UC-approved Honors Level, and transferable college courses. 

19 UC APPLICATIONS When it comes to exam by credit here is the distinction between SL exams and HL exams: (From UC admissions website) International Baccalaureate exam credits The International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization awards either a diploma or a certificate for individual IB exams. UC awards students who complete the IB diploma with a score of 30 or above with 30 quarter (20 semester) units toward their UC degree. Students who receive IB certificates with scores of 5, 6 or 7 on Higher Level exams will receive 8 quarter (5.3 semester) units. Designated examinations are awarded elective units which may be applied to UC graduation requirements for specific subjects and/or for general education/breadth requirements, as determined by each campus. Students or counselors should refer to individual campus catalogs/bulletins for more information on how subject credit may be granted. The units granted for IB exams are not counted toward the maximum number of credits required for declaration of a major or the maximum number of units a student may accumulate prior to graduation. Students who enter the UC with IB credit do not have to declare a major earlier than other students, nor are they required to graduate earlier.

Keep/get their grades up Ensure they meet a-g course requirements Register for SAT or ACT (at least one by Fall) – Fee waivers are available in the CCC Check in with Academic Counselor Secure writers for Letters of Rec. before summer – Counselor/College Advisor and 1-2 teachers (varies by school)
