3 Why am I doing this??? A brief reminder for rising seniors and their parents

4 The average acceptance rate of IB students into university/college is 22% higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population. The acceptance rate of IB students into Ivy League institutions (Princeton, Yale, Brown, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania) is between 3% and 13% higher compared to the total population acceptance rate. Based on student responses to a 2011 survey conducted by the IB, IB students are admitted to colleges and universities at rates higher than the general acceptance rates for the schools. On average, IB students’ acceptance rate is 22% higher than that of the total population for the school. Even at highly selective Ivy League Universities, IB students are admitted at rates 3-13% higher than the total population. 10 Which North Hills students are “IB Students”?
RISING JUNIORS QUESTION: Which North Hills students are “IB Students”?

11 ALL North Hills students are IB students.
ANSWER: ALL North Hills students are IB students. IB Continuum School PYP (K-5) Exhibition MYP (6-10) Personal Project 11-12 Theory of Knowledge Extended Essay CAS

12 So the choice is, should I be
NHP IB “Certificate” Can take AP courses sophomore & junior years CAS, TOK, EE junior & senior years Can take AP & IB Diploma courses senior year or NHP IB Diploma AP courses sophomore & junior years CAS, TOK, EE junior & senior years Finish 6 IBDP Courses (3 HL, 3 SL) senior year

13 What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma?
Pre-university diploma (in addition to NHP Diploma) Utilizes international standards Based on an integrated curriculum Cultivates student international mindedness

14 What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma?
International Admissions Credential Over 3,697 IB authorized schools in 147 countries* 220 IB continuum schools in world, 30 in North America* 0.8% of Texas students take IB exams+ *Source IB Website, Referenced 15 Jan 2014 +Source TEA Report on AP & IB Exam results,

15 The IB Diploma Is NOT a replacement for the North Hills Diploma.
Grades in NHP DP classes are not based upon grades on IB exams (though NHP grades should correlate with student preparedness for IB exams). It is possible to get the NHP Diploma but not the IB Diploma (and vice-versa).

17 North Hills students take both AP and IB courses.
Courses such as AP World History can be taken in 10th grade. IB Diploma courses begin in 11th grade, with the IB exam being taken in May of the 12th grade year. AP courses often integrated with DP courses during the 11th grade year, with students taking the AP exam in May of the 11th grade year.

18 AP Compared to DP

19 Both AP & DP Offer courses widely accepted for college credit.
Provide educational rigor and quality that helps prepare students for college. Are assessed externally, AP by the College Board and ETS, DP by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

20 AP differs from DP AP offers a “cafeteria plan” for which students can choose to take one AP course, several, or none. AP results are based upon a single assessment. AP is focused towards the educational system of the United States.

21 DP provides a whole, integrated curriculum.
DP differs from AP DP provides a whole, integrated curriculum. Theory of Knowledge provides connections. Extended Essay requires independent research. CAS ensures well-roundedness. Internal Assessments measure a variety of skills.

22 DP differs from AP DP is based upon multiple assessments, both Internal and External. Independent student choice is often a feature of the assessments, to a greater degree than on AP assessments. Assessments reflect those typically used in colleges to a greater degree than AP assessments.

23 Are IB exams more equitable than AP exams?
Percentage passing exams:* Overall Asian White Hispanic African American Not Economically Disadvantaged Economically Disadvantaged AP 49% 68% 63% 34% 25% 58% 30% IB 86% 93% 87% 83% 67% 88% 77% *Source: TEA report on AP and IB Exam Results in Texas

24 DP differs from AP Assessments are designed to ensure that students are taught a broad range of research, experimental, analytical, and presentation skills. DP is more international in its outlook. DP places greater stress upon the recognition that there are many differing points of view and students’ ability to weigh the validity of differing outlooks.

25 The IB “Core” Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
Connects all the IB subjects together TOK Essay and Presentation Extended Essay (EE) 4000 word collegiate level research paper Creativity/Action/Service (CAS) Creative Endeavors Physical Activity Service Learning

26 Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
Connects subjects together: Mathematics Natural Science Human Science The Arts Religious Knowledge Systems Indigenous Knowledge Systems Ethics History We discuss questions like: Can art be fundamentally good or bad? How complete is the picture of the world that science provides us? How much do ethical decisions depend on society and individuals? Does our view of history change over time?

27 Extended Essay (EE) The essay must be 4000 words.
Students are expected to put in 40 hrs of work. Topics are limited to the NHP subject areas. Students craft a narrowly focused research question, develop an extended argument supported by research, and make valid conclusions. An EE may not be duplicated by the student for other assessments submitted to IB (i.e. TOK Essay, History IA, etc.).

28 EE Titles Attitudes toward human spirituality in Goethe’s Faust and Marlow’s Dr. Faustus How does Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin reflect the time period’s transition from neo- classical to romantic writing styles? The historical influence of Mithraism on the early development of Christianity To what extent did Woodrow Wilson’s Latin American policy reflect the ideals presented in the Fourteen Points? Throughout the course of the years , how important were the contributions of Islamic architecture to Spanish architecture?

29 EE Titles The Epicurean ideals of morality and the afterlife in comparison to views on morality in J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings A comparison of Cartesian and Leibnizian principles and their influence on modern rationalism How does the carbon to nitrogen ratio of seeded sludge affect the biogas production of batch digesters? The effect of fertilizer on population growth in freshwater Chlorella How does temperature and saccharide type affect the metabolism and growth of these four basic cultures: Serratia Marcesens, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus lueus and Bacillus subtilis?

30 Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
Creativity: involves a wide range of fine arts and design activities. Activity: includes participation in individual and team sports, expeditions, and physical training. Service: involves community or social service for others. 1-3 hours of CAS per week with reflection. Students must document their activities on ManageBac

31 CAS Learning Outcomes Increased your awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth Undertaken new challenges Planned and initiates activities Worked collaboratively with others Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities Engaged with issues of global importance Considered the ethical implications of their actions Developed new skills

32 Diploma Programme (DP)
Students study: 3 subjects at Higher Level (240 hrs. each) 3 subjects at standard level (150 hrs. each) 3 part of the Core

33 IB Diploma Requirements
Complete Core Elements (TOK, CAS, EE) Take Three Higher Level and Three Standard Level Courses One Course (HL or SL) From Each Subject Group Each course two years in length, except in some cases students can choose to take one SL course in a single year. At North Hills the first year of IB courses are often integrated with AP courses.

37 Earning the IB Diploma Participate in and complete internal/external assessments for six IB courses: 3 (or not more than 4) Higher Level (HL) courses 3 (or 2) Standard Level (SL) courses Complete Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Submit an original Extended Essay (EE), Complete a Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) Plan

38 EARNING THE IB DIPLOMA 42 Exam Points 3 Core Points 45 Total Points
24 Points to Receive Diploma

39 Earning the IB Diploma Earning the IB DIPLOMA = 24 Points
4 / 7 points for each subject is passing (i.e. achieving 50 % correct equates to a 4). If you earn more than three 3s, you do not receive the diploma. Also, students must achieve 12 points total in their HL classes to get the diploma. These facts alone make HL courses very important. If you achieve an E (elementary) in TOK or on the EE, then it is considered to be a failing condition (i.e. no diploma). Not enough CAS is also a failing condition (i.e. no diploma).

41 Advantages of DP DP goes beyond AP preparation for college and life.
CAS encourages the development of the whole individual beyond academics. Theory of Knowledge integrates modes of knowing from all subject areas. DP tasks (such as the EE and IAs) develop a greater variety of skills valuable in college and the workplace, including research, experimentation, analysis, presentation, and time management. Research is self-driven in areas of personal interest Success in the IB Diploma Program inspires confidence leading to success in college and beyond. International Baccalaureate fosters an international outlook for success in modern world.

49 IB prepares students for college success
“IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB programme correlates well with success at Harvard. We are pleased to see the credential of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript.” Marlyn McGrath Lewis, Assistant Dean of Admissions, Harvard University, USA “The IB is a first-rate programme, one we are familiar with, and it prepares students well for a university like ours.” Fred Hargadon, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Princeton University Colleges and universities recognize the effort students put into their studies in the Diploma Programme, preparing them well for success in college. 01 January 2012

50 Colleges recognize the value of an IB education
“We know the quality of IB courses, and we think the IB curriculum is terrific.” Christoph Guttentag, Director of Admissions, Duke University “The rigour of IB Diploma requirements meets our recommendation for the strongest high school preparation possible. ... In sum, the IB diploma candidate who has met the challenge successfully receives strong consideration from the William & Mary admission committee.” Allison Jesse, former Associate Dean of Admissions, College of William and Mary Colleges and universities appreciate the quality of an IB education. 01 January 2012

51 Colleges seek IB students
“We're looking for students who are engagers—students who are maximizing opportunities in the classroom, maximizing opportunities outside of the classroom. What's very unique about IB is that through its curriculum it allows students to be able to satisfy the requirements of the types of students that we're looking for.” Kedra Ishop, Vice Provost and Director of Admissions, UT Austin Colleges and universities look for students with the qualities and experiences of IB students. 01 January 2012

52 How to Prepare for DP Complete required electives (PE, Speech, Technology, Fine Arts) during 9th & 10th grade years. Prepare by taking advanced classes, such as honors science, math, AP Human Geography and AP World History. Register for courses midway through 10th grade year Complete IB Diploma Program commitment form. Register for all courses required for the IB Diploma (check IB Course Planning Guide). The most important predictor of success in the IB Diploma Program is the DESIRE to be successful!
