Programs At R.E. Mountain Secondary School
R.E. Mountain Pre-IB Program Formally known as the Honours Program Grades 9 and 10 Diploma Program Grades 11 and 12 IB Fees are required in Gr. 11 and 12 Course (Certificate) Program Partial IB Program Grades 11 and 12 . Difference – advantages Diploma – full program – full IB experience – Universities look at full diploma first when considering applications, well rounded curriculum – humanities, sciences, languages Research clearly shows that 1st year students who do the IB diploma are a full letter grade higher in their first year of university Most early admission is saved for full IB Better scholarships Partial – if you don’t want to handle the demands of the full IB Are busy with other things eg. Heavy into sports, music Don’t feel academically ready Full diploma fill classes first Partial is permitted only if space permits Last year – no spaces in chemistry for instance Partial can take TOK if room permits Not all students in full diploma choose to take university credit for courses. Instead, they take an easy first year and get excellent grades Transition into university is: ‘seamless”

How is quality maintained in IB?
Diploma Ages Curriculum Student assessment Professional development School evaluation Inquiry –based curriculum Student centred All exams in May Teacher Pro D every 5 years in each subject Also send pre-IB teachers School evaluation The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 – 19, for success at university and life beyond

The IB undertakes random inspections of schools during exams.
What is special about IB assessment? IB assessment is rigorous, criterion related, consistent and differentiating of student ability. Diploma Programme assessment includes both final examinations and internal assessment undertaken by the teacher to IB criteria and then externally moderated by the IB. All 4,000 examiners are ‘quality checked’ through a process of moderation. The IB undertakes random inspections of schools during exams. Results published on: July 6th for May Exams Internal assessment in all subjects is based on authentic research Kids have to come up with their own problem Camp in May provides opportunity for field research in sciences
23
The diploma is graded over 45 points giving ample scope to differentiate student ability
Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points. 4. The overall diploma pass rate has been consistent year to year 5. Diploma Programme assessment – principles and practice – available on IB Assessment We have averaged 32 points per student over the last 5 years. SFU – an IB student who receives 34 points gets an automatic $7000 scholarship First year equivalency for diploma recipients If going into Engineering or sciences sometimes you may need to pick up other classes Many choose to go into first year regardless to have a strong transition
