WHAT ARE DRUGS a. drugs- any chemical substance that can affect the mind or body. b. prescription drug- medicine that can not be bought without a doctors “note”. c. over-the-counter drugs- (OTC) medicines that anyone can buy. d. d__________- taking any drug into your body. e. drug misuse- using a drug in an incorrect manner. f. d___________- heavy and repeated use of a drug that causes damage to the body.

3 DRUG DEPENDENCE- people who are physically or psychologically dependent on a drug.
P___________________- when the body needs a constant supply of the drug. “CRAVING” a. withdrawal sickness- reaction from your body when the drug is taken away. b. T______________- when the body needs more and more of the drug to get high. c. O______________- taking an amount of a drug large enough to harm you or even kill you. 2. psychological dependence- an emotional need for a drug. Much tougher to break the habit

4 III. Classification of PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS
1. Stimulants- drugs that speed up the nervous system. a. they make you feel more active. b. they cause your heart rate to increase. c. examples of stimulants are caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, speed. A- _______________-irritability, headaches. B- _______________- nervousness, mental confusion, strong physical and psychological dependencies *street names include snow, powder, blow, rock, uppers, crank, ice, speed.

5 2. Depressants- drugs that slow down the nervous system
b. c. 3 main classes of depressants A. sedative-hypnotic- originally developed for medical reasons and only prescribed by a doctor. 1. barbiturates- “sleeping pills” developed to treat insomnia and nervousness. 2. m______________- “quaaludes” originally prescribed by doctors. Later became illegal because people were abusing them. 3. tranquilizers- “valium” used for treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia.

*short-term effects- drowsiness, sleepy, feeling of relaxation, unconsciousness. *long-term effects- *street names include reds, red devils, yellow jackets, rainbows, “Q’s”, ludes. Alcohol- come back to later

7 3. Narcotics- Those drugs that act as depressants and _____ your nervous system. (painkillers)

8 4. Hallucinogens- Changes the way the user hears and sees things.
a. H______________- Hear or see things that are not really there; you may hear color and see sound……. “BAD TRIP” very strong psychological dependency develops. NO medical use for hallucinogens F_____________- unexpected return to a bad trip.

(Munchies) c. Long term effects- short term memory loss, emphysema, greater risk of cancer, destroys white blood cells. street names include chronic, weed, pot, reefer, grass, ganja, blunts B. 11 IV. Why people use drugs other than medical reasons there are no “legitimate/good” reasons to use drugs Why to abuse drugs:- common reasons given by former users (teenagers) to get high . to escape from problems peer pressure boredom
