Preparation Pays Off… Being prepared can make the difference between an unpleasant experience and one that goes smoothly. New parents may be surprised to learn of all the decisions and preparation they need to make before the baby arrives. Parents-to-be should discuss options with their obstetrician. Health clinics, hospitals, public health offices, and the internet are all good sources of information.
6
Finding a Pediatrician
Choose a Pediatrician before your due date so the obstetrician can share information with the baby’s doctor immediately before and after the child is born. Pediatrician: A doctor who specializes in the treatment of infants, children and adolescents. Some families don’t take their babies to the pediatrician. Instead they take them to a family doctor or clinic.

Do Now: What are the Lamaze and Bradley methods of childbirth?
Google it or refer to the video we watched about breathing through childbirth
10
The Bradley Method® is a system of natural labor techniques in which a woman and her coach play an active part. It is a simple method of increasing self-awareness, teaching a woman how to deal with the stress of labor by tuning in to her own body. The Bradley Method® encourages mothers to trust their bodies using natural breathing, relaxation, nutrition, exercise, and education.
11
Lamaze Once upon a time, the hallmark of Lamaze childbirth education was “breathing” (hee, hoo, hee, hoo). Over the years, Lamaze has evolved into a comprehensive approach to childbirth, part of which are comfort measures for labor; breathing is one of the suggested comfort measures. You pay attention to all the physical, emotional, and spiritual changes you’re experiencing
12
Selecting a Birthing Location
Locations vary from community to community but generally include: 1. Hospital Delivery Room 2. Birthing Center 3. Home Birth
13
Hospital Delivery Room
90% of all births take place in the hospital. Women are admitted once labor has begun. Labor : series of contractions of the uterine muscles gradually begin to push the baby out of the mother’s body. Here the woman is monitored by tracking the baby’s vital signs.
15
The baby is moved to the nursery and brought to mother for feedings.
Women give birth to their baby in the delivery room where all the equipment is needed for the birth. Equipped for surgery and emergency procedures, this area is highly recommended when the health of the mother or child is at risk. After giving birth to her baby the woman returns to a recovery room while the mother is watched for complications. The baby is moved to the nursery and brought to mother for feedings. Hospital stays last one to three days.
16
Cesarean sections may require an operating room.

18
Birthing Room/Center Specifically designed for labor plus delivery.
Provides the “comforts of home.” Women have the option of delivering in a bed, from a chair, or in a tub of water. Staffed with a nurse-midwife. This is for women with a low risk of complications.

This has a high medical risk which is not advised.
Home Birth This has a high medical risk which is not advised. Some states consider this illegal when only a nurse-midwife is present. A home birth may take place when a woman can not reach the hospital before delivery. Those who choose this method must include plans for quick medical assistance in case of an emergency.

Choosing a Feeding Method
Each feeding method has advantages. If the baby is thriving and the parents are comfortable with the method, they have made the right choice for them. 1. Breastfeeding 2. Bottle feeding
26
Breast Feeding In many cultures, breast feeding always has been the only safe, practical way to feed infants. This was true of Western societies until the early 1900’s. Perfect Food –Breast milk is easier to digest & rarely causes constipation. Babies only nurse until they are full, so they are less likely to be overfed. Antibodies –Breast milk carries disease fighting agents called antibodies. They help protect the baby from illness during the 1st few months of life. Breast-fed babies generally have fewer illnesses than bottle-fed babies and tend to develop fewer food allergies as they grow.
27
Breast Feeding… Convenient and Economic – A mother’s milk is ready at all times, at the right temperature, and requires no preparation. . If mother is working, she can express, or pump out the milk into a bottle for a caregiver to feed the baby. If you have an onsite daycare center you can take time to feed the baby when needed.
28
Breast Feeding… Physical benefit for the mother – Breast feeding releases a hormone that stimulates the uterus to return to it usual condition. Bonding – You begin to enjoy this special bond that you have with your infant. The mother feels more confident in their parenting skills, which increases an infant’s sense of love and security.
29
In Addition… Children should not be given cow’s milk until they are one year old. Mother’s milk is easier to the baby to digest.
30
Bottle Feeding A healthful alternative to breast feeding is bottle-feeding. Allows fathers, grandparents and other relatives to share in the work and rewards of feeding the baby. Gives the mother time to rest.
31
Must sterilize bottle nipples and replace them when they wear out.
Bottle-Feeding… Formula – A commercially prepared mixture of milk or milk substitute, water and added nutrients. If an infant appears to be allergic to a cow’s milk formula, the doctor may suggest a soy milk variety. Available ready to use, but can also be a concentrated liquid or powder, which are mixed with boiled or bottled water. Must sterilize bottle nipples and replace them when they wear out.
32
Bottle Feeding Issues…
Sometimes parents let the baby continue to use a bottle longer than necessary and that can cause dental issues.
