1 Nineveh’s Day of Reckoning
Nahum Nineveh’s Day of Reckoning

2 The Book of Nahum Written to Nineveh, capital of Assyria, telling of their wickedness that is bringing about their destruction. Tells that their destruction will not heal – they will be destroyed. Also written to the Hebrews in Judah, assuring them that Assyria will not come against them again. They won’t be there to be a threat ever again!

3 The Book of Nahum Nahum mentions the fall of No-Amon, or Thebes, which occurred in 663 BC. It was past tense. Nineveh fell in 612 BC. Nahum was telling of its coming. This would put the book roughly in the neighborhood if 630 BC. Judah had Jotham, ; Ahaz, ; Hezekiah, ; Manasseh, ; Amon, ; Josiah,

4 Jonah prophesied of Jeroboam II,
who reigned 41 years, 2 Kings 14:23-25. Jeroboam II ~ BC Nineveh fell 612 BC Generally believed Jonah to Nineveh ~781 BC That leaves ~169 years.

5 Nahum 1:1 - Intro Nahum 1:1 The burden against Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. God's Wrath on His Enemies NKJV

6 Nahum 1:1 - Intro Zephaniah 2:13 And He will stretch out His hand against the north, destroy Assyria, and make Nineveh a desolation, as dry as the wilderness. 14 The herds shall lie down in her midst, every beast of the nation. Both the pelican and the bittern shall lodge on the capitals of her pillars; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be at the threshold; for He will lay bare the cedar work. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt securely, that said in her heart, "I am it, and there is none besides me.“ How has she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down! Everyone who passes by her shall hiss and shake his fist. NKJV

7 Nahum 1:2-8 God’s Anger with Nineveh
Nahum 1:2 God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; the Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies; 3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. NKJV Deuteronomy 32:39 'Now see that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver from My hand…41 If I whet My glittering sword, and My hand takes hold on judgment, I will render vengeance to My enemies, and repay those who hate Me. 42 I will make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh, with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the heads of the leaders of the enemy."' 43 "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people; for He will avenge the blood of His servants, and render vengeance to His adversaries; He will provide atonement for His land and His people." NKJV

8 Nahum 1:2-8 God’s Anger with Nineveh
Nahum 1:2 God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; the Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies; 3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. 4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the flower of Lebanon wilts. 5 The mountains quake before Him, the hills melt, and the earth heaves at His presence, yes, the world and all who dwell in it. NKJV Order out of chaos – by intelligent design and absolute CONTROL. Red Sea crossing, Exodus 14 Places of great fertility in Canaan wither and wilt at His control. But WHY?! God not limited to the land of Canaan – His control reaches EVERYWHERE.

9 Nahum 1:2-8 God’s Anger with Nineveh
6 Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him. 7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him. 8 But with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of its place, and darkness will pursue His enemies. NKJV He knows those who trust in Him. Did Assyria? Did Israel? Did Judah? With an overwhelming flood He will make an end of Nineveh’s place. Samaria had taken 3 YEARS to fall. Nineveh was far stronger. They were going to starve them out. 3 months in and massive rainfall undermined a wall so that 2.25 miles of wall began to collapse.

10 Nahum 1:9-15 Nineveh Judged; Judah Delivered
Nahum 1:9 What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time. 10 For while tangled like thorns, and while drunken like drunkards, they shall be devoured like stubble fully dried. 11 From you comes forth one who plots evil against the Lord, a wicked counselor. NKJV Malachi 4:1 "For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,“ says the Lord of hosts, "That will leave them neither root nor branch. NKJV Hebrews 12:29 (Deuteronomy 4:24) For our God is a consuming fire. NKJV

11 Nahum 1:9-15 Nineveh Judged; Judah Delivered
Nahum 1:9 What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time. 10 For while tangled like thorns, and while drunken like drunkards, they shall be devoured like stubble fully dried. 11 From you comes forth one who plots evil against the Lord, a wicked counselor. 12 Thus says the Lord: "Though they are safe, and likewise many, yet in this manner they will be cut down when he passes through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more; 13 For now I will break off his yoke from you, and burst your bonds apart." Words to Judah’s comfort. They were under heavy tribute until Hezekiah cast them off. Manasseh was drug to Assyria in fetters after being taken “among the thorns.” Manasseh and Amon were apparently coerced into working for Assyria.

12 Nahum 1:9-15 Nineveh Judged; Judah Delivered
Nahum 1:9 What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time. 10 For while tangled like thorns, and while drunken like drunkards, they shall be devoured like stubble fully dried. 11 From you comes forth one who plots evil against the Lord, a wicked counselor. 12 Thus says the Lord: "Though they are safe, and likewise many, yet in this manner they will be cut down when he passes through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more; 13 For now I will break off his yoke from you, and burst your bonds apart." 14 The Lord has given a command concerning you: "Your name shall be perpetuated no longer. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the molded image. I will dig your grave, for you are vile." NKJV "Nineveh should never be taken until the river became its enemy.“ King Sin- shar-ishkun believed. Made huge pyre in his home with large room in middle of it. Wives, eunuchs, garments, treasure…all up in flames with him. Where are their gods today? And yet Jehovah God is being worshipped today around the world!

13 Nahum 1:9-15 Nineveh Judged; Judah Delivered
I will dig your grave, for you are vile." 15 Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace! O Judah, keep your appointed feasts, perform your vows. For the wicked one shall no more pass through you; he is utterly cut off. NKJV Back to Judah with encouragement. (1:7, “He cares for those who trust in Him”). Hezekiah brought all Israel together to keep the Passover, 2 Chronicles 30.

14 Nahum 2:1-10 Nineveh’s Siege
Nahum 2:1 He who scatters has come up before your face. Man the fort! Watch the road! Strengthen your flanks! Fortify your power mightily. 2 For the Lord will restore the excellence of Jacob like the excellence of Israel, for the emptiers have emptied them out and ruined their vine branches. 3 The shields of his mighty men are made red, the valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots come with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the spears are brandished. 4 The chariots rage in the streets, they jostle one another in the broad roads; they seem like torches, they run like lightning. 5 He remembers his nobles; they stumble in their walk; they make haste to her walls, and the defense is prepared. 6 The gates of the rivers are opened, and the palace is dissolved. 7 It is decreed: She shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up; and her maidservants shall lead her as with the voice of doves, beating their breasts. 8 Though Nineveh of old was like a pool of water, now they flee away. 'Halt! Halt!" they cry; but no one turns back. 9 Take spoil of silver! Take spoil of gold! There is no end of treasure, or wealth of every desirable prize. 10 She is empty, desolate, and waste! The heart melts, and the knees shake; much pain is in every side, and all their faces are drained of color. NKJV The Babylonian Chronicles described the spoils taken from Nineveh by the Babylonians and the Medes in these terms: “Great quantities of spoil from the city, beyond counting, they carried off” (Luckenbill 1989, 2:420, ¶ 1178). Diodorus, a Greek historian from Sicily, writing in the first century BC, described the final hours of the king of Nineveh, Sardanapallus, in these words: In order that he might not fall into the hands of the enemy, he built an enormous pyre in his palace, heaped upon it all his gold and silver as well as every article of the royal wardrobe, and then...he consigned [his concubines and eunuchs] and himself and his palace to the flame (Book 2. 27:2; Old father 1998:1:441). Unfortunately, the Babylonian account is broken at this point. It says, “On that day Sin-shar-ishkun, king of Assyria, fled from the city (?)...” (Luckenbill 1989, 2:420; ¶ 1178).

15 Nahum 2:11-13 Nineveh’s Desolation
Nah 2:11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion walked, the lioness and lion's cub, and no one made them afraid? 12 The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, killed for his lionesses, filled his caves with prey, and his dens with flesh. 13 "Behold, I am against you," says the Lord of hosts, "I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall be heard no more." NKJV

16 Nahum 3:1-4 Nineveh’s Sins
Nah 3:1 Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery. Its victim never departs. 2 The noise of a whip and the noise of rattling wheels, of galloping horses, of clattering chariots! 3 Horsemen charge with bright sword and glittering spear. There is a multitude of slain, a great number of bodies, countless corpses — they stumble over the corpses — 4 Because of the multitude of harlotries of the seductive harlot, the mistress of sorceries, who sells nations through her harlotries, and families through her sorceries. NKJV Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. NKJV Harlotry and sorceries – Isaiah 47:2-3 …uncover the thigh…Your nakedness shall be uncovered, NKJV Isaiah 47:9 But these two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day: the loss of children, and widowhood. They shall come upon you in their fullness because of the multitude of your sorceries, for the great abundance of your enchantments. NKJV

17 Nahum 3:5-19 Nineveh’s Coming Doom
Nahum 3:5 "Behold, I am against you," says the Lord of Hosts; "I will lift your skirts over your face, I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame. 6 I will cast abominable filth upon you, make you vile, and make you a spectacle. 7 It shall come to pass that all who look upon you will flee from you, and say, 'Nineveh is laid waste! Who will bemoan her? 'Where shall I seek comforters for you?" NKJV

18 Nahum 3:5-19 Nineveh’s Coming Doom
Nahum 3:5 "Behold, I am against you," says the Lord of hosts; "I will lift your skirts over your face, I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame. 6 I will cast abominable filth upon you, make you vile, and make you a spectacle. 7 It shall come to pass that all who look upon you will flee from you, and say, 'Nineveh is laid waste! Who will bemoan her? 'Where shall I seek comforters for you?" 8 Are you better than No Amon that was situated by the River, that had the waters around her, whose rampart was the sea, whose wall was the sea? 9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was boundless; Put and Lubim were your helpers. 10 Yet she was carried away, she went into captivity; her young children also were dashed to pieces at the head of every street; they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. 11 You also will be drunk; you will be hidden; you also will seek refuge from the enemy. 12 All your strongholds are fig trees with ripened figs: if they are shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater. 13 Surely, your people in your midst are women! The gates of your land are wide open for your enemies; fire shall devour the bars of your gates. NKJV

19 Nahum 3:5-19 Nineveh’s Coming Doom
14 Draw your water for the siege! Fortify your strongholds! Go into the clay and tread the mortar! Make strong the brick kiln! 15 There the fire will devour you, the sword will cut you off; it will eat you up like a locust. Make yourself many — like the locust! Make yourself many — like the swarming locusts! 16 You have multiplied your merchants more than the stars of heaven. The locust plunders and flies away. 17 Your commanders are like swarming locusts, and your generals like great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges on a cold day; when the sun rises they flee away, and the place where they are is not known. 18 Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; your nobles rest in the dust. Your people are scattered on the mountains, and no one gathers them. 19 Your injury has no healing, your wound is severe. All who hear news of you will clap their hands over you, for upon whom has not your wickedness passed continually? NKJV

20 Assyria was soon Annihilated
Egypt was made rich and powerful when God brought them Joseph. Egypt was decimated when God brought the plagues through Moses. Egypt was hobbled when God drowned her Pharaoh and army in the Red Sea. But Egypt recovered enough to continue on. Many more setbacks occurred, and they suffer periodic upheaval and great changes, yet… Egypt still exists today. When Samaria fell in 722 BC to Sargon II, the ten tribes were GONE FOREVER. 614 BC, Asshur fell BC, Nineveh fell. By 608 BC Assyria was GONE FOREVER.

21 Tell Kuyunjik “The Mound of Many Sheep” Nineveh Today

22 What do WE do with this? Hebrews 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness, 9 where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My works forty years. 10 Therefore I was angry with that generation, and said, 'They always go astray in their heart, and they have not known My ways.' 11 So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.'" 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." 16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. NKJV
