Completion (Fill in the blank) Recall (Memory) Open-ended (Can’t be answered with yes or no) Wh- questions (Who, what, when, where, why, how) Distancing (How does the story connect with the outside world?)

2 Expanding on An Answer Prompt: Ask an open-ended question. For example: What kind of animal is that? Evaluate: Think about the child’s response. How can you expand the discussion? Do you need to correct what is said in any way? For example: It looks like a cat, but it’s actually a dog. Expand: Follow answers with more questions. For example: “What color is the dog? What is the dog doing?” Repeat Let your child know his or her answer is correct by repeating it back. “Yes, that’s a brown, spotted dog” or “Yes, that dog is running.”
