1 Within 5 minutes of the bell ringing:
Take out your notebooks. Turn to your journal section. Be sure to write today’s date! Answer the following questions in complete sentences: a. How would you describe your note-taking skills? Do you try to write down every word you hear or do you have specific strategies you use? b. What do you think is the most important thing to remember when taking notes?

2 History of Cornell Notes
Developed in 1949 at Cornell University by Walter Pauk. Designed in response to frustration over student test scores. Meant to be easily used as a test study guide. Adopted by most major law schools as the preferred note taking method.

3 All Students at CCHS are trained in Cornell Note Method

4 Why take notes? Good notes allow students to help each other problem-solve.

5 Why take notes? Cornell note taking stimulates critical thinking skills. Note taking helps you remember what is said in class. A good set of notes can help you work on assignments and prepare for tests outside of the classroom.

14 Notes

15 LOOK FOR CUES Repeats Writes on board Changes voice
Emphasizes in any way If that little voice in your head thinks it is important, then write it down!

16 BE QUICK Use symbols and abbreviations. Don’t worry about mechanics.
Write in phrases. Leave space to add more detail later. If you fall behind the speaker, you’re writing too much.

17 QUESTION Always be thinking of questions.
If you don’t understand, ask. Write questions when you review. Make them hard. The only stupid question is the one you don’t attempt to answer.

18 REVIEW ASAP! Check accuracy of notes. Write questions & summary.
Underline/Highlight important stuff. Most forgetting happens in the first 24 hours.

19

20 SUMMARIZE Tell what you learned. Main ideas, not details.
Don’t give a class play-by-play. If you can’t explain what you learned, did you learn anything?

21 Summary

22 A-B Partner Teach Stand up.
With a partner, go back and forth and tell what the 7 steps are to Cornell Notes, in order. Help the other person if he/she gets stuck. When you are finished, have the other person start and do it again. Sit down when you are finished.

23 STUDY Read over notes. Recite aloud. Self-Test.
Compare with other students. Waiting until the night before the test to study is a sure way to lower your grade.

24

25 Thumbs Up-Thumbs Down You should write down every word your teacher says. You should put key terms on the left side of your paper. A summary of the notes on that page goes at the bottom. A good title for your Cornell Notes should be Math or ELA.

26 Why Take Notes at All?? Set up a new piece of paper to take notes on the following video.
