1 Celebrate Nelson Mandela CAFOD hero
Teacher notes: Play this PowerPoint with U2’s ‘Ordinary Love’ from the film ‘ A long walk to freedom’ on the life of Nelson Mandela. (Be aware of advert at the beginning). The powerpoint is animated to move on automatically once started. It is timed to last 3 minutes 13 seconds.

2 Nelson Mandela was President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
Teacher notes: Explain that Mandela was the first South African president to be democratically elected by a fair vote.

3 But his journey was hard.

4 Mandela worked hard to end apartheid in South Africa.
Apartheid meant black and white people could not mix together. Black and white children went to separate schools and hospitals. They could not play on same sports team together. Teacher notes: Explain that the apartheid (say A-PART-HITE) system separated people of different races. For example, black and white people could not share a table in a restaurant, or sit together on a bus. Sports teams were never mixed..

5 Mandela believed that everybody should be treated equally.
He campaigned to end apartheid. Mandela was arrested in 1962. Teacher notes: Explain that Mandela’s active campaigning to bring down the apartheid system (separating people of different races) led to his arrest in 1962. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1964. Discuss what campaigning means.

6 Mandela was in prison for 27 years.
He left prison in 1990 and continued to work hard for equality in South Africa.

7 Mandela worked hard to bring people together to live in peace.

“Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” (London, 2005) This photograph was taken in Trafalgar Square, during the 2005 Make Poverty History campaign. It was here that Mandela said: “Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

11 “I have learned that if we get on well, we can live in peace and be far away from the violence”.
Teacher notes: CAFOD’s partners, the Sisters of St Clare, are helping Maria’s community to develop more peaceful ways of living with each other. One way of doing this is through sport, music and dance activities for the children. Find out more about Maria’s story at cafod.org.uk/primary/sport Maria and her friends live in a shanty town in El Salvador, where there is violence. CAFOD is working with Maria’s community to build peace through sport, music and dance.
