1 Introduction to Student Learning Objectives
Educator Effectiveness System Training This is an overview of Student Learning Objectives (SLOs).

2 The EES Uses Multiple Measures
Hawaii Growth Model Classroom Observation/Working Portfolio Educator Effectiveness Data Student Learning Objectives are a component of the Student Growth and Learning half of the Educator Effectiveness System. SLOs are a process that supports improved student achievement. Teachers are evaluated on how well students have met the expected targets set for them at the beginning of the interval. Improved Student Outcomes

3 Opening Activity

4 Think of a Content Area 1. What do you specifically want students to understand by the end of the school year? (What important ideas do you want them to grasp?)

5 2. What skills or processes will they need to be able to know and do in order to understand or grasp main content?

6 (What resources do you have to help them learn this?)
3. How will they learn this? (What resources do you have to help them learn this?)

7 4. How will you evaluate the what and how?

8 Share your organizer with your elbow partner.
5 & 6. What processes or skills will they need to get them where you want them to be? Share your organizer with your elbow partner.

11 Tips for Writing Learning Goal
1. Choose DOK 3 Learning Goal 2. Reflect and support with standard vocabulary 2.NBT.1: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones; 2.NBT.3: Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. 2.NBT.4: Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. The Learning Goal Statement: Students will understand and represent place value by reading and writing numbers using base-ten numerals and representing numbers pictorially (using symbols for base-ten block manipulatives), writing numbers in expanded form, locating a number on a number line, and comparing numbers using inequality symbols. This slide is addressing the question- Does the learning goal reflect all major aspects of the identified standards? When the SLO includes multiple standards the learning goal statement would be a synthesis of the key parts of the standards. Use this slide to show how these 3 standards were combined to make that learning goal statement….are the major aspects reflected? These are the CCSSM standards related to the learning goal example for the 2nd grade math class on the previous slide. The intent of 2.NBT.1, is to have students develop an understanding of how the different digits in a 3-digit number represents different amounts based on the place of the digit in the number. This means having students develop a conceptual understanding of how different digits represent different base-ten values. Having students apply their understanding of place value using different representations will allow the students to develop a deep understanding of place value. See alignment in green. The intent of 2.NBT.3 is to have students develop the skill of reading and writing numbers in various ways, numerals, names & expanded form. This is stated in this portion of the LG. See alignment in red. The last standard, 2.NBT.4, discusses comparing numbers based on the values of the different digits. This is contained in the last part of the LG. See alignment in blue.

12 SLO/ SSIO Teacher Template
SLO Sample SLO/ SSIO Teacher Template SLO Record Sheet Rubric Assessment Below Approaching Meet Exceed Criteria #1 Descriptor for rubric Criteria #2 Criteria #3 Assessment Rubric This is the assessment rubric for the 5th grade writing SLO… See packet for actual example When I have the time, II will paste a copy here. These documents can be found on the DOE Intranet site. The SLO process includes four main documents: Student Learning Objective Technical Guidance and Planning Document: provides technical information and guidance on how to write an SLO Teacher Template: a plan for the academic goal Record Sheet: a class record of the student starting points, expected targets and final results (for student-centered SLOs) Rubric for Rating the Quality of SLO/SSIOs

13 Key Deadlines EES Manual, p. 27
The beginning conference is a critical step in the SLO process. It is during the initial conference that the teacher and administrator discuss the SLO plan and determines whether the plan is of acceptable quality. Only acceptable quality SLOs may be implemented. EES Manual, p. 27

14 ReCap The SLO Template AND columns 1-7 of the SLO Record Sheet need to be completed before it is approved Quality Criteria for this document have to be met before it can be approved There are timelines for the interval that you choose
