2
Why would you choose for the master Sustainable Energy Technology?
To become a member of a new generation of engineers that will lead the renewable energy revolution! You will become the expert to respond the global energy challenge
3
The Global Energy Challenge
Climate Change Security of energy supply Sustainability and renewable resources
5
World energy consumption increases tremendously
6
World energy flows in 2010 Conclusion 1: We are addicted to fossils
Conclusion 2: We need sustainable alternatives World energy flows in 2010 To assess the present role and the potential future role of biomass in the world energy supply, it may be helpful to look first at the present energy flows at a global scale. The bulk of the gross energy production (515 EJ in 2010) is embodied in fossil fuels: gas, oil and coal. A significant portion of the energy in fossil fuels is lost in the upstream processes, I’ll return to this issue. Another portion of the fossil fuels is used to generate electricity and a smaller part is used for non-energy purposes as chemical feedstock. Traditional biomass (wood, straw, dung. peat) contributes about 51 EJ or about 10% of the gross production, and about 16% of the world final energy consumption. Note the difference between the gross energy production - also called primary energy production - and the final energy consumption. The tradional biomass figures are not exactly known. It is not expected that the contribution of traditional biomass would be replaced by other energy sources or industrial biofuels within a foreseeable future. J.W.
