MarkingCollector - TRL’s new approach to lane marking condition assessment.
November 2016
2
Need for monitoring of marking condition
Road markings are critically important to driver safety and of growing importance to the use of driver aids and automated vehicles Maintaining the asset can be expensive and disruptive – intelligent asset management is required 50% of the network annually Retroreflectivity = amount of light reflected in the direction of the source Wear = basically the remaining amount of the line which is visable Luminance = effectivly how bright the line colour of the line is to the eye Skid risitance = self explanatory annually on 25 % of critical areas of the network i.e., stop lines, large areas of paint (arrows at mortorway junctions)
3
Need for traffic speed Solution
Handheld solutions require traffic management and surveyors on the carriageway increasing both risk and cost 2 options for survey – static testing using hand held instruments or driven susrvey
4
Current traffic speed technology
Current traffic speed monitoring equipment: Often protrudes from side of vehicle, raising safety concerns Requires a special driving line meaning the equipment cant be integrated with other surface condition assessment (which requires a normal driving line), lowers productivity / increases cost Sometimes requires nighttime collection (meaning video cant be collected), lowers productivity / increases cost Some systems suffer from data repeatability problems – quality Generally only collect one lane edge marking with each pass of the vehicle so repeat runs are needed, lowers productivity / increases cost In lane markings not detected - quality
5
TRL’s MarkingCollector
No requirement for traffic management No surveyors on the carriageway Improved data quality over currently deployed technology Allows data to be collected in the normal driving line in any lighting condition Can be combined with other sensors to allow all surface condition data to be collected Can provide data for both lane edges and in-lane markings Cost comparable with other traffic speed other technology
