The Battle of Britain “Never in a field of conflict was so much owed, by so many, to so few.” –Winston Churchill In Britain, the new Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, declared that Britain would never surrender. Hitler decided to see about that. He had a plan called Operation Sea Lion, which had the goal of knocking out the Royal Air Force of Britain, and then sending 250,000 soldiers across the channel to take over.

The Battle of Britain Hilter's plan was to invade Great Britain by knocking out the Royal Air Force and then landing 250,000 soldiers on England's shores. German bombers targeted British airfields and aircraft factories. September 7, 1940 they began focusing on cities - London.

Germany Attacks the Soviet Union
Germany turned against the Soviet Union which meant fighting on two fronts. Soviet Union joined the Allied Powers. Germany Attacks the Soviet Union June 1941, Hitler was now ready to move in on Russia. His plan was called Operation Barbarossa. The Germans completely surprised the Russians with their blitzkrieg invasion. After a few weeks they were 500 miles inside of the Soviet Union. As the Russians retreated they burned and destroyed everything. This was the same tactic that they used against Napoleon.

Germans took over Leningrad and Moscow.
On September 8th, 1941, the Germans surrounded the city of Leningrad and it’s 2.5 million inhabitants. He planned to starve them into submission. The people ate cattle and horse feed. Then they ate cats and dogs. Then they ate rats and crows. All the while Hitler bombed the city. Over the winter, 1 million people in the city would die. They still did not surrender. Hitler decided to go after Moscow on October 2nd, 1941. With the winter, the fuel began to freeze on the Germans. Hitler would not allow his troops to pull back from the city. 500,000 Germans would die here.

Germans Move Deeper Into Soviet Territory
By November 1941, the cold stopped the German offensive. In the summer of 1942, Germans begin moving deeper into Soviet territory. They hoped to take Stalingrad in the south. “Not a step backwards.” –Joseph Stalin

Stalingrad The Battle began in August 23, 1942.
Germans wanted to control the oil fields near the city. By November Germans controlled 90% of the city of Stalingrad. Over 1 million Soviet Soliders died. From that point on the Soviet Army began to move in on Germany.

Starting in August of 1942, severe house-to-house fighting in the Russian city of Stalingrad led to a stinging German defeat. Thousands of Russian citizens and soldiers died each day in an effort to keep the Germans from taking the city.

Lend-Lease Act U.S. was supposed to be isolated.
The Lend-Lease Act allowed America to sell, lend, or lease arms or other war supplies to any nation that was considered, “vital to the defense of the United States.” In America, the people still did not want to get involved. President Roosevelt knew that the allies needed help. So he talked Congress into allowing the allies to buy American arms. They would have to pay cash and carry them back on their own ships.

The Aftermath of the Attack
Deaths: Over 2,300 people died. Wounded: 1,178 were wounded. What was destroyed? Two U.S. Navy battleships, one minelayer, two destroyers, and 188 aircraft. Read the following statistics: The casualty list includes 2,335 servicemen and 68 civilians killed, with 1,178 wounded. Included are 1,104 men aboard the Battleship USS Arizona killed after a 1,760-pound air bomb penetrated into the forward magazine causing catastrophic explosions. Define Casualites
