8 July 2016 GOVERNMENT OF GRIFFON DAMAGE REPORT UPDATE
8 July, 2016 (1000 HAST): Death Toll: 2,748, with several thousand still missing. Injured: 7,320 Approximately 100,000 people are affected by the earthquake Destruction of Houses: 24,800 homes and buildings completely destroyed, and 74,968 are badly damaged. Many roads have been damaged or blocked from landslides, effectively isolating several inland towns located at the base of mountains. Cell phone coverage is severely degraded in the Lelehana, Waipalamu, and Aawaa areas. GRIFFON AIRPORT AUTHORITY The Griffon Airport Authority has declared an immediate requirement to open the airport in Hanakawa. Since the initial earthquake the village of Hanakawa has been isolated by landslides. Access to Hanakawa is not possible via land. The runway is heavily damaged and unusable. The southern portion of the ramp has been washed away. There is approximately 2,500m of ramp available for helicopters (see attached imagery). The control tower is not operational, controllers are not available. Hanakawa has a population of approximately 10k and there are growing concerns about the mortality rate among children under five and elderly affected by the disaster. There is urgently need for external assistance with food, water, shelter, and medical before mortality among these vulnerable populations spikes. The airport authority of Griffon is requesting assistance from the coalition military. Humanitarian needs In the wake of the earthquake that affected Griffon on 4 July 2016 and following initial reporting of extensive damage in the country, the Government of Griffon has requested international assistance to deal with the aftermath of earthquake. The government is currently reporting that needs include: 1. Search and Rescue capacity; 2. Medical teams, supplies and tenting for hospitals, and dead-body bags; 3. Heavy equipment for rubble removal; 4. Helicopters for transport and access to blocked areas; 5. Rehabilitation of key infrastructure (port and airports) A number of Member States have made offers of support, including the deployment of Military and Civil Defense Assets (MCDA).
