2 Essential Question EQ: How was the United States driven to be an imperialistic nation? I will analyze the major factors that drove the United States to imperialism and choose which factor had the biggest influence on the policy.

3 America Claims an Empire: Imperialism
Beginning in 1867 and continuing through the century, global competition caused the US to expand. During this time the US acquired Hawaii and Alaska (they both became states in 1959).

4 Admiral Alfred T. Mahan Most outspoken advocate of US military expansion. Wanted the US to expand its navy to compete with other countries.
