Open Mooting

General Information Mooting gives you the opportunity to learn and develop your legal skills and knowledge in a practical environment. Teams consist of a senior counsel, junior counsel and instructing solicitor (who does not speak in moots). We encourage you to swap these positions around so everyone gets to have a go! You are welcome to enter the competition in teams of two, however we recommend that you find a third person to share the workload. The problem will be released 48 hours prior to your scheduled moot and can cover a wide range of legal issues. Your written submissions are due 24 hours prior to your moot.

General Information All teams will be guaranteed at least 2 moots. Round 1 is a practice round, with Round 2 being the first knock-out round. These rounds have been designed to ensure that they are accessible to first years and later years alike. So if you miss out on a spot in First Year Mooting you should absolutely enter the Open Competition. Mooting is a time consuming yet rewarding activity. There is a 48 hour time frame in which you will research and prepare for your upcoming moot. Whilst we do not expect or condone teams skipping class in preparation of a moot, we do want to remind you that you will need to set aside time to thoroughly and adequately prepare yourselves before each moot.

General Information We also want to emphasise that there are harsh penalties for forfeiting especially after the problem has been released. The Mooting Competition Guidebook outlines the rules and expectations of the Open Competition. Teams should familiarise themselves with these. The Guidebook, a Sample of a Written Submission and Scoresheet are all available on the MULSS website under ‘Mooting’.

How to Register Registration will open at 6.30pm Friday 3 March. We will contact successful teams on Monday 6 March. When registration opens we will post a link on today’s Facebook event - ‘Mooting Information Session’. The link will also be available via the MULSS website. A couple of things to remember: Please ensure that only one member of each team registers on behalf of your team. This person will be the main contact point for your team. We will teams once registration is complete. At this point all members should join the Facebook group for the Competition which will be our main point of contact with you.

How to Register To ensure that registration is quick and easy, there are a few things you should have ready: Your team name (the punnier the better) The full names of all team members The student numbers of all team members The student addresses of all team members Teams are also able to indicate if they have a preferred night to compete (Wednesday or Thursday) when registering. While we will endeavour to accommodate requests, indicating a preference does not guarantee your team will be assigned to that day.
