Hello, welcome to lab safety!
2
Standard S7CS2. Students will use standard safety practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations.
3
Learning Target I can demonstrate proper lab procedures?
5
To ensure that no student is injured during a science lab, lab safety rules have been developed.
By following the safety rules that have been developed, labs will run smoothly.
6
What will I learn? I will understand the importance of following all lab rules. I will be able to recognize lab safety symbols. I will be able to put into practice those lab safety rules that I have learned.
7
Rule One DO NOT start a lab before the teacher instructs you to begin.
Read all of the lab procedures before beginning the lab. Do not get in a big hurry. Remember, safety must always be first.
8
Rule Two Be familiar with the safety symbols displayed in the lab.
Know the location and proper usage of the safety equipment found in the lab.
9
Use lab equipment properly:
To operate the fire extinguisher: P Pull the pin. A Aim the hose at the base of the fire from 5-6 feet away. S Squeeze the handle. S Sweep the hose back and forth across the fire.
10
Rule Three Proper protective equipment should be worn in the lab.
Goggles or safety glasses should be worn in labs that involve fire, glass, and chemicals.
11
Rule Four Long hair should be tied back and dangling jewelry should not be worn. It might catch on the equipment.
12
Rule Five Never eat or drink in the lab.
13
Rule Six Never test an unknown by inhaling directly----always waft.
14
Rule Seven Do your part to avoid all accidents, but if an accident should occur-----PLEASE report the accident. Do not attempt to collect broken glass.
16
Rule Eight Do not pour chemicals down the drain. Chemicals are to be placed in appropriate containers for disposal. Biological materials must also be disposed of properly.
17
Rule Nine Horseplay will not be tolerated!
Do not climb, sit, or stand on furniture. Do not run inside of the lab. Do not move from the assigned lab station!!!!!!!
18
Rule Ten When in doubt ASK!!!
19
Rule 11: After completing a lab
you should always wash your hands.
20
Points to Remember Wear eye protection when working with chemicals, flames, or glass wear. Sharp Object Symbol: Always walk with the point facing down. Cut away from the fingers and body. Electrical safety: Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it. Never use electricity around water. Unplug all equipment before leaving the lab.
21
Hand safety: Carry glasswear carefully
Hand safety: Carry glasswear carefully! If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes. Heating safety: Never leave a heat source unattended. Never look into a container as you are heating it. Heated metal and glass looks cool, but it is not! Use tongs or gloves before handling hot materials. Tie back long hair or loose clothing. Never point a test tube toward you or another person.
22
Bio(logical) hazard: This involves organisms or other biological material that might be harmful. Avoid skin contact with these materials. Always wear mask or gloves. Animal safety: This symbol appears when safety of animals or students must be ensured.

1st and 5th periods: Newspaper Article
You will write a newspaper article concerning lab safety and the catastrophe that occurred because the safety rules were not adhered to in the lab. You may use any location/any lab setting. (school, CDC, pharmaceutical lab, etc.) Ten rules must be included. Number each rule by using a superscript.
27
1st and 5th periods: Newspaper Article Continued
A graphic must be included. Remember, articles are succinct. Tell the whole story in as few words as possible. Give who, what, when, where, and how. Have fun with this. Name your paper. Put in advertisements.
28
3rd & 4th Lab Safety Wanted Poster
Choose a rule to illustrate and tell Mrs. Belisle/Mrs. Kinney which one you chose. Refer to your rubric These should be neat, colorful, and descriptive, Big, Bold, Bright, Beautiful. These posters are intended to “hook” the targeted audience and deliver a message in graphics and text.
29
Poster Continued This will be a WANTED POSTER.
There will be a MO (Modus Operandi or method of working) to show the culprits method of operating. How the infraction is committed. A graphic or picture of the offense. A reward would be a nice touch for this poster. (What will be earned for “catching” the culprit.)
