42 Writing Assignment #1 ALL IN BOOK! DO NOT USE GOOGLE!
Explain how geographic locations and its lengthy reign impact Egyptian artistic style? Compare and contrast architecture of two civilizations from this chapter? (Ex. Greek and Roman) Identify the style from each civilization being used in regards to the “Human Figure” and why they used that style from this chapter?

43 SAMPLE ANSWER TO QUESTION 1
Geographic locations impacted the artistic style of Egyptian art by defining the style of art used as well as the materials used in art. The Egyptian society formed near the Nile River. This river is known to be one of the lengthiest river in the world. The Nile river flooded yearly, which left rich deposits of soil that allowed planting once the floodwater evaporated. This allowed Egyptians to resourcefully adopt resources to help them survive and produce the materials needed to produce art. Another impact of the Egyptian artistic style would be the lengthy reign of the Egyptian leaders and gods. This impacted the Egyptian artistic style by allowing artists to set the tone for the standards that define the physical attributes of the people in power of the Egyptian civilization. One way the tone was set for the phenotypes (physical attributes) of the Gods was by the use of the grid system. This grid system was a template for artists who were creating sculptures of the powerful Gods on tablets. This created a representational relief sculptures of the Gods in certain poses or in battle. For example, the Palette of King Narmer (Figure 17- 9). The Egyptian style of art impacted succeeding forms of art based on the materials as well as using the powerful leaders who lead the civilization and went to battle as a theme for the many forms of artwork.

44 SAMPLE ANSWER TO QUESTION 2
There are many similarities as well as differences in architecture of the Indus valley and Greek civilizations. One difference is in regards to the composition of the complexes. An example of composition being different between the Indus valley and Greek civilizations is that with the Indus valley, the complexes are composed of bricks that are plastered together with a watertight substance called gypsum. An example of this would be the Large Water Tank (Figure 17-12). This was created using the brick with a deepened area used for public usage, it is said to be used as a public bathing space. However, with the Greek Civilization, the material used to compose this structure is marble. Instead of sinking in, the structures are elevated. One known example of this would be the Acropolis (Figure 17-18). The prefix Acro- means to be above. The word ending -Polis means City. One similarity between the architectures of both the Indus valley and the Greek Civilizations is the usage of the architectures. It is said that both facilities mentioned were used as public complexes during their time of occupancy. The Large Water Tank was used for public bathing and the Acropolis was used for religious practices.

45 SAMPLE ANSWER TO QUESTION 3
The style of art from each civilization carries similarities because it is based on the Human figure. The human figure is the physical representation of a human being. One way in which the style of art from each civilization relates to the human figure is by creating the template for what figures in power should look like as well as act. One civilization that designs the template for the human appearance is the Egyptian civilization. The Egyptians created a grid based system that dictates the parts of the human body go where on the tablets. This sets the tone as to where the human parts are in relation to real perspective and scaling to the tablet (King Narmer). Another way that the Egyptian civilization regards to the human figure is by having the persons in power at certain poses. These poses can either be looking up to the higher Gods (Queen Nefertiti) or sitting on the thrown (King Khafre). the authors of the textbook use this for the chapter because during the time in which these artworks were conceived, it was the beginning of new erupting civilizations. This time marked the beginning of history. The beginning times also set the standard for the creation of the human appearance through artwork as well as how the physical appearance of humans is perceived through art regardless of the medium used. The human figure that was created during the beginning of time for humans has created the template for succeeding forms of art marking humans. Beginning art created the physical human appearance in regards to appearance and actions.
