2 FACT Alcohol is involved in over half of all fatal auto accidents.

3 MYTH In South Dakota you can be 18 years old to purchase alcohol.
This is a myth, you must be 21 years old to purchase alcohol anywhere in the United States.

4 MYTH Scarring and destruction of your liver is defined as an ulcer.
Cirrhosis is defined as scarring and destruction of your liver.

5 FACT Alcohol has no food value, but lots of calories.

6 FACT Alcohol dulls the senses– not only sight, but sense of touch, smell, taste, and hearing as well. Think back to our activity with the ruler and how your reaction time was slower when one of your senses was not functioning at full speed!

7 FACT Heavy drinkers have an increased risk of cancer of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, and bladder. Also have a greater risk for stomach ulcers.

8 MYTH Alcohol is a type of drug that we would consider a stimulant.
Alcohol is a drug but IT IS NOT A STIMULANT. IT IS A DEPRESSANT

10 FACT Alcohol can ruin relationships, change personalities and make an individual not act themselves. Since alcohol is a drug it alters the way our brains work causing people to act very different than they normally would!

11 MYTH If a female is pregnant it is ok if they drink heavy doses of alcohol daily. This is very dangerous for the mother and the baby. The baby can be born with physical and mental deformities. This is called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome!

12 FACT Alcohol is very addictive. Drinking alcohol can become a habit that is hard to give up What is the percentage of people who defeat their addictions for good?

13 FACT There are 3 different types of alcohol with beer being the weakest of the three. What alcohol is considered the strongest?

14 MYTH The frontal lobe of the brain controls our balance and coordination. The cerebellum controls our balance and coordination!

15 MYTH The brain stem is where our long-term memories are created.

16 FACT The frontal lobe helps us decided between right and wrong. It is called the “seat of higher intellectual functions.”

Alcohol is extremely dangerous and can lead to death if to much alcohol is consumed.

21 MYTH Alcohol can not change your brain.
Your brain is growing in size and expanding academically until the age of 21. Drinking before the age of 21 is very dangerous.

22 FACT Withdrawal is the brain’s way of trying to recover after heavy alcohol use. Withdrawal is one of the main reasons why many people can not beat their alcohol addiction.

23 Myth When people drive drunk they only hurt themselves.

24 FACT Binge drinking is drinking a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time.

25 FACT The amount of alcohol a person can consume before becoming intoxicated differs in everyone. Many factors come into play: Size Tolerance Food in stomach How fast a person drinks

26 MYTH Drinking is found to help people relax, so they can deal with their problems better the next day. This a myth. Those problems will still exist and now your brain will not be working at its best, the next day. Drinking does not make your problems go away it actually creates more problems!
