1 Application Documentation
Letter of Application Curriculum Vitae (CV) Application Form

2 Letter of Application (1)
Your CV should be accompanied by a letter of application, and these two items form a package. The letter has a number of purposes: It allows you to sell yourself by pointing out key features of your CV. It gives you the opportunity to include material that is not in the CV, especially personal qualities that you listed when making your preparations. It shows a prospective employer that you know how to write a letter. While this may be of decreasing importance in an electronic age, many employers still value it highly, both as a skill in its own right and as a test of your ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

3 Letter of Application (2)
What should go in it? The letter of application should follow the general guidelines for all business letters. It should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction: In the introduction you should detail the job you are applying for, and, if relevant, the circumstances that have led to this (for example an advertisement, or the recommendation of an agency). The body: The body of the letter provides you with an opportunity to present yourself to the employer: Tell the reader about your present job and why you are looking to move on. Explain why you are suitable for this job Emphasize the skills you have which make you particularly suitable for the job List briefly the personal qualities you would bring to it Answer any specific questions posed by the advert or job details It is important not to write too much, however. Two, or at most three, short punchy paragraphs are much more effective than two sides of rambling prose. The conclusion: The conclusion should round the letter off, leaving the reader with a positive image. It should sum up briefly the selling points made in the body of the letter, mention any items (including the CV) you are enclosing, and express willingness to provide any further information that the reader may want.

4 Curriculum Vitae Your curriculum vitae must be concise. Your curriculum vitae must be easy to read. Your curriculum vitae must sell you – your skills, qualifications, personality and experience. And your curriculum vitae must be tailored to what the reader is looking for. A chronological CV presents your education and work experience either in the order in which they happened, or in reverse order, with your most recent experience first.

5 Application Form If an organisation requires you to complete an application form, it will be sent OR ed to you. It is important that you use correct spelling and grammar and complete it as neatly as possible following the instructions.

6 Application Form Research both the job and the company.
Read the application instructions thoroughly and follow them through. Complete all the relevant sections – name, address, education & training, employment history, details of referees (always ensure they are aware that you have used their details), etc. It is essential that you address the ‘Personal Specification’ which will be located in the Job Pack. To be short-listed you must demonstrate how you satisfy the ‘essential’ criteria. Read the job advertisement and made sure that you are clear about what skills are needed. Do not submit an application form which contains alterations / crossing out and check the spelling of words which you are unsure. Make a copy of the application form so you can make a rough draft or your application before completing the original form. Check and double-check how the finished document looks. Do not include any information which is incorrect – if you are appointed it is a serious matter if you have deliberately included false information on your application form. The application form must be signed and dated. Send it to the address on the application form within the timescale.
