May 22, 2016 JONAH Praying Prophet
12
Jonah hated Assyria, and that is the main problem Jonah had with the particular mission that God handed to him. Jonah was told to go and preach in Nineveh urging repentance. Jonah would much rather see them destroyed. J.W. Quinn

because he delighted in the Lord.
Jonah’s prayer was born out of affliction, not affection. Jonah cried out to God because he was in danger, not because he delighted in the Lord. Unknown

The prophet accepts God’s discipline
3 You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath Your wild and stormy waves.
25
7 If you endure chastening, God deals illegitimate and not sons.
with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Hebrews 12:7-8
26
The prophet trusts God’s promises
4 Then I said, ‘O Lord, You have driven me from Your presence. Yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
27
5 “I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me
5 “I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head. 6 I sank down to the very roots of the mountains. I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever.
28
7 As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord
7 As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. And my earnest prayer went out to You in Your holy Temple.
29
38 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the plague of his own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this temple: 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men), 1 Kings 8:38-39
30
The prophet yields to God’s will
8 Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies. 9 But I will offer sacrifices to You with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the Lord alone.”

The Miracles of Jonah
34
10 Then the Lord ordered the fish to spit Jonah out onto the beach.
35
The Sign of Jonah 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
36
39 But He answered and said to them,
“An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
37
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth
38
41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. Matthew 1`2:38-41
39
The story of Jonah foreshadows the redemptive work
of Jesus Christ. JONAH JESUS 1. His mission was to call the gentile Assyrians of Nineveh 1. His mission was to all of mankind. 2. Jonah was willing to sacrifice his life for the salvation of his shipmates 2. Jesus was willing to sacrifice His life for the salvation of the world 3. He was entombed in the belly of a great fish 3. After Jesus' death He was placed in a tomb 4. On the third day Jonah was "resurrected" from the belly of the fish 4. On the third day Jesus was resurrected from the tomb
40
JONAH JESUS 5. After his "resurrection" from the belly of the fish, Jonah continued his mission to call the gentile Assyrians to repentance and salvation 5. After His resurrection from the tomb, Jesus continued His mission to found the universal Church and to commission the Apostles to spread the gospel to every nation on earth 6. Jonah preached that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days if the people did not repent 6. After His resurrection, Jesus taught for forty days before His Ascension 7. Jonah taught that failure to repent sin brings judgment but salvation is a gift of God 7. Jesus taught that failure to repent sin brings judgment but salvation is a gift of God M. JONAH JESUS DISOBEDIENT OBEDIENT
42
What Next?
43
What Next? …He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
44
What Next? 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:8-11

47
I will serve Thee because I love Thee You have given life to me;
I was nothing before You found me, You have given life to me.
48
Heartaches, broken pieces Ruined lives are why You died on Calvary;
Your touch was what I longed for. You have given life to me.
