Union Church Path to Net Zero Energy (10 Years of Progress)
2
MACED Mission… To work with people in Kentucky and
Central Appalachia to create economic opportunity, strengthen democracy and support the sustainable use of natural resources.
3
Our E3 Service Area The 54 Kentucky Counties Designated by the Appalachian Regional Commission
4
The Purpose: Strengthen the region’s enterprises by helping reduce energy costs and consumption
5
The Team Jason Coomes Energy Programs Manager Joshua Bills
Commercial Energy Specialist
6
The Benefits: An enterprise that pays lower utility bills has more money to invest in people, further clean energy and community Demand for new skills in plumbing, HVAC, lighting improvements can lead to job creation and security Pollution reduction

Union Church – Baseline
In the beginning… OCTOBER 2007 TO SEPTEMBER 2008 Natural Gas Use ,000 ft3 Electric Use ,640 kWh HOW TO COMPARE? Convert both to MMBtu (about the energy from a million matches) 1 ft3 Natural Gas = Approx Btu or MMBtu 1 kWh = 3412 Btu or MMBtu Natural Gas MMBtu $12,115 Electric MMBtu $6,991 Above Costs Do Not Reflect Base Fees Nor Demand Charges (in the case of electric) OCTOBER 2007 TO SEPTEMBER 2008 Natural Gas Costs = $ per MMBtu Today (2017) NG = $9 per MMBtu Electric Costs = $ per MMBtu Today (2017) Electric = $18 per MMBtu

Energy & Cost Saving Measures
Billing evaluation--IMPORTANT Identify no cost savings opportunities Turn off Natural Gas During Unused Months Upgrade Building Envelope Lighting Upgrade Monitor and Manage Electricity Demand Boiler Replacement/Heat-Cool Distribution Upgrade/Thermostat Upgrade Solar Thermal for Space/Water Heating Solar Electric Billing Evaluation—sales tax, optional rate classes—true evaluation of savings impacts—where to look EC has done everything EXCEPT solar thermal
9
Efficiency Takes Hold 2012 excluded only includes months of January and February 51.6 percent less energy 2016 from 2007 in spite of 14 percent more degree days Total annual energy expenditure dropped $6,300—takes a LOT OF SOLAR to make $6,300 of electricity

Apples to Apples 2012 excluded

11
Solar on Top of Energy Savings
Estimated to offset 25 percent of overall use 78 percent self consumed Self Consumed Electricity $555 (2016) Exported Electricity $84 (2016) Savings on Demand $230 (2016) Different value streams (July to December 2016): Self Consumed Electricity $555 ($0.0601/kWh) Exported Electricity $84 ($0.0324/kWh) Savings on Demand $230 ($6.095/kW)
12
Demand vs. Usage BMU’s electric charges are based on both monthly consumption (Total kWh) and peak power draw – averaged over 15 min. (kW) $6.095 per kW Coffee Pot—1.5 kW over 15 minutes and happened at monthly peak. kWh costs would be 1.5 kW (x15/60) = kWh x = $0.0225 kW 1.5 x = $9.14 $ per kWh

35 Percent of annual costs are Demand (kW) Charges!

What Does It Look Like? August 2016 w/o solar
Sunday Morn and Wednesday Eve

What Does It Look Like? August 2016 w/ solar
Difference of max is zero—the peak demand happened at 8:45 PM Still morning and evening peaks
16
Does solar help demand? SOMETIMES
Load demand curve. Blue is net 50 highest demand periods (i.e. at BMU meter) for the month of September. Orange is actual building demand at those times (w/o accounting for solar). Top three 15-minute demand periods were reduced by solar. Savings for this month was $92 in demand charges for Sep. Energy savings this month was $115 with solar.
