How do I navigate the college maze?
Get academic advising! Get it early, and get it often! How often? EVERY QUARTER! Who to get it from? BIOLOGY FACULTY Professional advisors, peer advisors Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) Fall quarter: come see a Biology Advisor!
15
A few important things about email...
Your address: is OFFICIAL! Financial aid deadlines Course information from professors NOBODY has your phone number
16
What do I do if I get lost? http://biology.csusb.edu Lots of useful
information… Course info Degree “roadmaps” Office hours (for advising) Etc…
17
Today’s ONLY goal: sign up for Fall 2017 classes
99.9% of you will select the following: A Math (MATH) class An English (ENG) class A General Education (GE) class
18
What NOT to do today! DO NOT obsess over your choices!
DO NOT pick classes you are not ready for! DO NOT try to plan out the rest of your college career today! DO NOT go above 12 (14) units! DO NOT choose BIOL 100! Unless... You are working on Nursing pre-requisites You are not committed to the Biology major
19
How to choose the appropriate Math class
If you are not enrolled (or will not enroll) in a summer Math program, you should enroll in whatever your Blue Sheet tells you to. If you are enrolled in a summer Math program: Try to enroll in MATH110 If that doesn’t work, then pick a non-MATH GE class for now The Math Dept. will help you pick the right class over the summer!
20
What else to enroll in? English: Directed Self Placement (DSP)!
ENG102A (and ENG103A and 104A), or... ENG105A (and ENG106A), or... ENG107 COMM120, or... GE Category A4 (Critical Thinking) Other required GE courses avoid GE Category B (for now) Category C3 (foreign lang.): credit by exam
21
Can I start science classes?
To enroll in CHEM 215, you must be at least co-enrolled in MATH 110 Don’t worry; almost NOBODY starts science classes immediately. FYI: students not matriculating as college ready for math have a dramatically lower chance of succeeding in the Biology major
22
Can I do more? We recommend you do NOT exceed 12 units for Fall quarter Other classes to maybe add: UTSD100A Freshman Seminar (2 units), this is a good class to take! KINE205 (Phys. Ed., 2 units) Wait until at least Winter to do more!
