Currently on 4th period of Interreg programmes (Interreg IV – ) European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Objective 3: European Territorial Cooperation 65% Grant Rate European Territorial Co-operation & Cohesion Integrated Spatial Planning on a big scale Not a Transport Specific Programme Regional Based 79 co-operation zones across Europe

4 INTERREG Strands The INTERREG programme has 3 Strands:
INTERREG IVA – Cross Border Co-operation Cross border co-operation through common development strategies INTERREG IVB – Transnational Co-operation Transnational co-operation to promote better integration INTERREG IVC – Interregional Co-operation Interregional co-operation to improve the effectiveness of regional development polices by exchange and sharing of experience IVA = Implementation and/or Knowledge/Experience Sharing IVB = Implementation IVC = Knowledge/Experience Sharing

A Common Working Plan/Themes Pooling & Co-ordination of common resources to solve a common problem Addressing common challenges of the participating regions The value of Co-operation The generation of innovative and efficient solutions to common problems The ability to learn from other countries/regions – you will be surprised! Obtaining the views of people/technicians from other countries/regions – testing your systems

6 Key Features of an INTERREG Project (1)
An INTERREG project needs: A strong common theme with both Local and European level practical outcomes; A strong partnership with representatives from each participating Member State; Innovation – joint thinking to solve common problems; Joint promotions, products, standards and strategies; Long term impacts;

Implementation Projects (IVA & IVB): Tangible outcomes – Implementation, Implementation…… Production of self sustaining products. Knowledge Sharing Projects (IVC) Development of Knowledge Networks Promotion & Dissemination Show impact on Local Policy

12 UK & Ireland INTERREG IVC Programme
Unlike the Interreg IVA and IVB Programmes, which have defined geographical zones of cooperation, the IVC Programme supports cooperation across all 27 EU Member States as well as Norway and Switzerland IVC is a "Capitalisation" Programme, meaning that it focuses on the identification, analysis and dissemination of good practices by public authorities to improve the effectiveness of regional and local policies.

Promoting Accessibility between Regional and Transnational transport Networks in EuRope

18 PARTNER - Atlantic Area INTERREG IIIB Project (164)
The ultimate aim of PARTNER was to make it easy for people to travel to, from and around the Atlantic Area using a combination of local public transport and inter-regional transport services. PARTNER was the first example of transnational project in this subject area to facilitate transnational co-operation and exchange of experience to resolve problems that are common to all cities in the Atlantic Area.

24 START - Atlantic Area INTERREG IVB Project
START is a 7M€ project that began in Jan 2009 and will be completed at the end of 2011 The project will continue on from PARTNER by: Promoting the INTEGRA concept; INTEGRA portal – Prototype to Product; Regional Journey Planner development & interoperability; Advanced Traveller Information Systems; Advanced Ticketing Smartcards; Accessibility of information to all; Improved Transport services & interchanges.

25 INSTIGATE – An INTERREG IVC Project Application
INvestigating Sustainable Transport options linked to Interregional GATEways INSTIGATE is an application for a 3M€ project The overall objective of the project is to enhance sustainable mobility in cities and regions with specific reference to the provision of seamless journeys for the inter-regional traveller. If successful, INSTIGATE will establish a network for exchange of experience and ideas on these issues between 15 local and regional authorities in 9 countries.
