History Ancient Egyptians developed the first sails around 4,000 B.C. using papyrus reeds.

History Ancient Greek and Roman ships used cotton cloth and leather straps to make sails.

History Sailing became used for trade and transportation throughout Europe, Asia, and northern Africa.

A mast is the tall, vertical pole that supports the sail.

Speed Speed is an objects change in position over time. How speedy you are is how much change you have in a set amount of time.

Length In this experiment, length will be the distance traveled in centimeters or inches.

Balance The ability to be stable; equally distributed forces. In sail design, does the boat rock side to side, or stay calm and balanced?
