Unit 3- Peripherals & Ports
2
Objectives Identify & describe input devices
Identify & describe output devices Connect input & output devices to a computer Identify common peripherals Identify common ports on a computer and what plugs into them
3
Input Devices Allow data IN the computer
4
Input Device- Keyboard
Regular Backlit Ergonomic Wireless Flexible Virtual/On-Screen Ergonomic: allows use of more natural hand, wrist, and arm position. Help prevent carpal tunnel. Wireless: Has a USB device to receive/transmit signals or is Bluetooth Flexible: rolls up for travel; is water-resistant. Virtual: on-screen or portable.
5
Input Device- Mouse Mechanical Optical Laser Wired; Has a ball
LED light Works on most surfaces Laser Laser light Works on glass Optical & Laser come in wired or wireless. Can’t tell the difference between optical & laser without reading the sticker on the mouse. Laser mouse is more accurate. Good for gaming.
6
Input Device- Voice Recognition
Speak commands into PC & enter text Software must be installed Need microphone Disabled people use
7
What are these input devices?
8
Review- 3Q Which type of keyboard would help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome? Ergonomic Which type of mouse works on any surface, including glass? Laser mouse What can you use to speak commands or text into a PC? Voice recognition software
9
Digital Camera- Special Input
Capture still pics & videos Point & shoot DSLR Pictures stored to media card SD is most common Transfer to computer or cloud
10
Digital Camera Features
Megapixels (12MP) Quality of photo Not as important anymore Millions of dots More= better prints Lens/Zoom Optical Zoom (lens comes out) Digital Zoom (digitally enhanced) Anything over 5mp is great for digital photos & prints.
11
Digital Camera Zoom
12
Digital Camera Features
Screen size Touch screen Waterproof Use Rechargeable Battery NO ALKALINES!
13
Digital Camera on Phone
Look for same features Rear facing camera: 12.3mp Front-facing camera: 8mp Flash: Dual LED means there’s an LED flash on both front & rear camera Pixel size: bigger number means better low-light photos Camcorder/Video: 4K, 1080p= very high definition videos
14
Review- 4Q What feature describes the quality of the photo?
Megapixels Which type of zoom occurs when the lens actually goes in/out of the camera body? Optical zoom What type of camera is most common? Point and shoot What type of camera do professional photographers use that has interchangeable lenses? DSLR
15
Project Look up & identify camera features for your assigned camera and your phone Add features to poster/flyer Include for Camera: Brand, Megapixels, Optical zoom, digital zoom, screen size, type of memory card, special features, type of battery Include for Phone: Brand, Megapixels, screen size, type of memory card, CPU brand/speed, RAM, internal storage size
16
Output Devices Data comes OUT of the computer
17
Output Device- Printers
Dots per Inch (DPI) More dots= better quality 4800 x 1200 (H x V) Pages Per Minute (PPM) How fast it will print Black & Color speeds usually differ Color is slower
18
DPI Examples Most printers today will print great quality.
19
Output Device- Printers
How it connects USB, Wireless, Mobile All-in-one Print, Scan, Copy Other features Duplex printing (both sides) Input paper capacity Amount of cartridges it takes
20
Inkjet Printer Nozzles spray liquid ink Takes ink cartridges
2 (black/tri-color) 4 (black/3 sep. colors) Prints hundreds of pages Great quality, fast, quiet Very inexpensive Also Photo quality cartridges & XL cartridges (more ink) are available. Colors are CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black)
21
Laser Printer Laser inside Toner is a powder Black or Color
Thousands of pages from toner Black or Color 4 color toners (CMYK) Great quality, very fast printing More expensive than inkjet
22
Finding Ink & Toner They make money from ink & toner
Printer: $50; Cost to make: $45 Ink Sells for: $20; Cost to make: $6 Use Ink & Toner Finder Note the XL’s. Look up on Best Buy’s website: HP - ENVY 4520 (HP 62 Black, HP 62 Tri-Color)
23
Project Find features of your assigned printer
Type: Printer or All-in-One Laser or Inkjet Color or Black only Black DPI; Color DPI Black PPM; Color PPM Connections; USB, Wireless, Mobile Paper Input Capacity Duplexing or Single-sided Amount of cartridges & cartridge # Cost of printer, ream of paper, 3’ USB Printer cable
24
Review- 4Q If your printer takes a cartridge with powder, what kind of printer is it? Laser What are the 4 printer colors used? CMYK What feature describes the quality of the prints? DPI What feature describes how fast a printer prints? PPM
25
Try & Name the Ports
26
PS/2 Ports- OLDER Purple Keyboard Green Mouse Both 6 pin female
27
Video Display Ports VGA HDMI Blue 15 pin female Video only, analog
Digital HD video & audio through one cable
28
USB Ports Transfer data & electricity
Plug and play (PnP) & Hot swappable High speed 2.0- fast; 10 songs/sec. 3.0- faster; songs/sec. Average digital photo is 2MB. Average mp3 song is 3-4MB. At typical USB speeds, you can transfer about 10 songs per second or 20 pictures per second. FRONT & BACK of PC. BLUE IS USB 3.0.
29
Network Port NIC or Ethernet Connect to network
8 pins LED connection lights Connect to network Use an Ethernet Cable /Network Cable Notice a telephone cable connector is smaller and only has 2 or 4 pins.
30
Audio Ports Line In Line Out Microphone Audio into PC
Record Player to PC Line Out Headphone Speakers Microphone Most laptops do not have audio in anymore (or it’s combined with mic input).
31
Try & Name the Ports
32
