Defining Scale

STUDENT DEFINITIONS OF SCALE
“Scale is using the same ratio or proportion in order to determine intervals between measurements so a precise scale can be obtained, to use in drawings, models, sketches, etc. A scale is created to balance measurements so they can be close to the accepted value. The houses in my neighborhood are roughly the same scale but some houses have different widths like some houses have an addition of balconies or an additional part to the house. The scale of my neighborhood houses would be different from those houses that have acres of space and a large area, my neighborhood can be compared to those roughly same scale apartment/condos because some have balconies and some do not.” “To my knowledge, scale is using identical numbers to figure out intervals with measurements. Scale can be used to check weight, solving a math problem, sketches, drawings. Scales are used to level out things so they can meet the same value. The houses in my neighborhood have the same scale. They have the same number of stories, width of the house. It is until you go father within my neighborhood the scales of the houses start different. The houses transition from regular houses to town houses, which causes the houses to have different scales”

STUDENT DEFINITIONS OF SCALE
“A scale is a way to compare the size of one object and another. The houses on my street are roughly the same scale. But the surrounding streets, the houses have a different scale. My street has houses with a larger scale, taller with a three story build. While the other houses have a smaller scale, shorter with a two story build. These houses are scaled differently because they were built at different time periods and with different architectural styles in mind.” “A scale is a ratio of one object to another. Thinking about the houses in my neighborhood, they are all the same scale in terms of the amount of land (sq. ft.) each receives. However, not all of them are the same size in terms of the actual house. Some of them are wider/longer than others. On other streets the houses look identical, like an architect came and planned them out. Other neighborhoods have more uniformity in terms of the designs of the houses, in contrast to my neighborhood where no one house really looks the same as another.”

What is a ratio? A comparison of two things What are some examples of ratios? Speed limit (miles per hour) Produce ($ per pound) Gas ($ per gallon)
5
How is scale defined in this class?
The size and proportion of one object compared to another object A dimension compared to a standard or to a common reference A device used to measure or draw a dimension

Debrief How would you create a graphic scale for the map below? Explain in complete sentences. Be sure to include the tools you would use. What other features of a technical drawing are missing from this map? List at least two (2). Maps are a type of technical drawing. The map from your classwork assignment is missing many of the features of a technical drawing.
