Presentation on theme: "Are you ready for online classes?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Are you ready for online classes?
Things to consider before taking online courses.

2 Are online classes 100% online?
Yes and No. Many online courses are “Hybrid” courses. Hybrid courses are almost 100% online but require students to arrive on campus for things such as testing or a final exam. “Ready-when-you-are” courses are closest to 100% online courses at HCC.

3 How do I know if I’m ready?
I manage my time well. I don’t procrastinate much. I set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. I know my limits. I won’t take subjects that are extremely difficult for me as online classes. I can work on my own with little help from others. Online classes do not provide much face-to-face instruction like traditional classes. Students taking online courses MUST be able to read and follow instructions well with little extra guidance.

4 How do I know if I’m ready?
Take the smartermeasure test at: I am computer literate. I am comfortable and experienced at using computers, printers, internet services, , tablets, etc… Playing computer games or texting on the mobile phone for hours does NOT mean you are computer literate!!!!! Taking online classes means you cannot give up every time you experience a technical problem and become frustrated!!!

5 What if I am not ready for online courses yet?
Take an introductory computer course such as: CPMT 1303 (Introduction to Computer Technology). ITSC 1301 (Introduction to Computers) ITSC 1309 (Integrated Software Applications) POFI 1301 (Computer Applications I) BCIS 1401 (Business Computer Applications) POFT 1329 (Beginning Keyboarding)

6 What else can I do? Talk to fellow students already taking online classes. Talk to an advisor or counselor at the Distance Education Department (Ask DE Counseling) Check out the Distance Education webpage at:

7 What if I’m already in an online class now and I’m not doing well?
Use the Ask Online tutoring website: Go to the Eagle Online helpdesk at:

8 Miscellaneous HCC’s online courses are operated using Moodlerooms learning management system. Before switching to Moodlerooms HCC used the Blackboard learning management system. A few courses at HCC can be taken using DVDs. If asked to report to a campus for a test when taking an online class, you can go to the following link for a map:
