INTRODUCTION Discrepancy between supply and demand of wood
Bamboo is one of alternative material for solid wood substitute For more flexible application, the shape and dimension appear to limit the usage of bamboo as solid wood substitute Producing laminated bamboo lumber is one way to overcome the limitation In recent years the plantation forest become the major suppliers of logs, with the fast growing species and relatively small diameter logs The quality of wood from plantation forest is normally inferior compared with logs from natural forest To enhance the quality and improve the wood utilization, it can be used as the core layer of laminated bamboo lumber.

OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of layer composition on the properties of laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) MATERIALS AND METHODS MATERIALS Andong bamboo (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea) Jabon wood (Anthocephalus cadamba); Manii wood (Maesopsis eminii); Sengon wood (Falcataria moluccana) Boron solution Water based polymer-isocyanate adhesive METHODS Preparation of bamboo strips and bamboo zephyr Producing bamboo sheets Preparation of wood planks Producing laminated bamboo lumber Testing

CONCLUSION The properties of laminated bamboo lumber were affected by the layers composition. Based on the Indonesian wood strength classification, laminated bamboo lumber made from all bamboo strips had strength values comparable to wood strength class I, while LBL with core layer made from wood plank of jabon, manii or sengon had strength values comparable to wood strength class III. All laminated bamboo lumbers produced are suitable for solid wood substitute as furniture and building materials.
