When summer is over and students return to school, teachers find that many students have fallen behind their previous year gain. National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) confirms that teachers spend a significant amount of time re-teaching material due to summer learning loss--three to six weeks re-teaching material from the previous school year. A Johns Hopkins study of Baltimore Public Schools notes that low-income youths “lose more than two months in reading achievement” over summer vacation, while their middle-class counterparts make small gains in reading achievement. Important to Note! Shin & Krashen report in their synthesis of all summer slide in reading research: All kids make about the same amount of progress during the school year The difference among children of all income levels appears to be heavily influenced by what happens over the summer. Children from higher income families make growth over the summer Created by Dr. MaryAnn Nickel,

“The crucial activity that occurs during the summer, the activity that causes the difference in growth in literacy, is recreational reading.” (p.19) Shin & Krashen, Summer Reading, Pearson, 2008 Created by Dr. MaryAnn Nickel,

10 Students’ Literate Identities
Students’ reading identity is formed over time. Their identities are built on their experiences in school and the identities that they learn to embody. Time to look at second to last page! Simply put: Your literate identity influences how you read! (Hall, 2012; O’Brien, Stewart, & Beach, 2009) Created by Dr. MaryAnn Nickel,
