HaBITs AND STATES IN THE PAST AND PRESENT
2
Present simple The present simple tense is used to express repeated , habitual actions in the present . We often use the present simple with : - adverbs of frequency , that go before the main verb , and after be . These adverbs are : always , usually , regularly ,normally, frequently ,often , sometimes ,occasionally and never E.g They usually play football on Sunday expressions of frequency that go at the end of the sentence or verb phrase, such as : every day , once a week ,two times E.g I go to the gym twice a week.
3
PRESENT SIMPLE AND USED TO
In order to explain that a past action doesn’t happen in the present, we use : any more/any longer with the present simple to contrast with used to E.g I used to eat a lot of chocolate but I don’t (eat) it any more .
4
HaBITS IN THE PAST For past habits we use used to/didn’t use to + infinitive. ( “used to” does not exist in the present tense). - Used to refers to past habits and states which were true in the past but are not true any more. E.g I used to smoke a packet a day but I stopped two years ago “Used to/didn’t use to” can be used with action verbs (e.g go,take,do etc.) and non-action verbs (e.g be,have, love, like etc.) E.g I used to drive to work but now I take the bus I didn’t use to like him but now I do Never used to has the same meaning as didn’t use to.
5
HABITS IN THE PAST We can also use the past simple to express habits and states that existed during a period of time in the past. This period can be mentioned or understood E.g When I was a child, I visited my grandmother every weekend.
6
USED TO OR PAST SIMPLE? BUT
“Used to” and past simple have the same meaning for repeated actions or states E.g I used to go to the cinema I went to the cinema. If the action happened only once, or we mention exact dates or number of time , we have to use past simple. E.g I went to the cinema once a week. BUT
7
BE USED TO AND GET USED TO
Attention! Don’t confuse “used to/didn’t use to” with “be used to” and “get used to”. Be used to + verb+ -ing to talk about things which we feel normal or things that we are accostumed to E.g My little daughter is used to eating lunch at school . We can use get used to + verb+ - ing to talk about the process of something becoming normal for us E.g I have always lived in the country but now I’m beginning to get used to living in the city.
