2. INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions for Annual Review of Bloodborne Pathogens (all employees, Category I and II):
View Power-point presentation and then sign off with your supervisor/school nurse that you have reviewed the material for the school year.

3. BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS POLICY AND EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN LOCATION

4. PURPOSE
Limits occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials since any exposure could result in transmission of Bloodborne Pathogens which could lead to disease or even death.

5. What Are Bloodborne Pathogens?
Microorganisms carried by human blood and other body fluids.

6. Signs and Symptoms of Bloodborne Diseases
Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) affect the liver by causing inflammation while HIV affects the immune system

7. TRANSMISSION OF THESE DISEASES
May be transmitted in:
Blood Body fluids Breaks in the skin Broken glass or sharp metal contaminated with blood or body fluids Needles contaminated with blood or body fluids Touching contaminated objects, then touching ones mouth, nose or eyes

8. RISKY BUSINESS?
The Sampson County Schools Exposure Control Plan identifies at-risk job classifications.
Category I includes secretaries, school first responders, PE teachers, EC Teachers, EC teacher Assistants, bus drivers, custodians and health occupation’s teachers.
Category II includes principals, assistant principals.

9. WHO’S AT RISK?
If you come in contact with any blood or body fluids you are at risk. The best way to prevent exposure is to use standard precautions!
HAVE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (GLOVES, GOGGLES, DISPOSABLE APRONS) AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES!
TREAT EVERYONE AS IF THEY ARE INFECTED!

10. To Limit Exposures
Use STANDARD precautions AND practice good hand washing every day!
Use personal protective equipment!
Do not recap needles!
Place glass and needles in a sharps container!
Clean and decontaminate work surfaces and equipment with provided Sanimaster 4 spray!
Use appropriate disinfectant that is available through custodian
Do not eat, drink, apply cosmetics, lip balms or insert contact lenses where exposures may occur!
Get the Hepatitis B Vaccine! Remember there is No Vaccine for Hepatitis C or HIV!

11. PPE (PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT) -WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME?
PPE kits may contain:
Gloves (use when potential for handling blood/body fluids)
Band-aids to put over cuts.
Gauze to control bleeding.
Mask and eye protection (use for potential splatters to face)
Disposal apron (use for potential splatter on clothes or body)
Antiseptic wipes (use to clean hands, accident site, etc.)
Absorbent and scoop
Red bag (use if large amount of blood/body fluid is present)
First Aid Responders also have a CPR face shield because they provide care for injured staff/students and are trained in CPR
***Contact Maintenance or Bus Garage to get your PPE materials.***

12. Got Gloves?
If you are listed in the Exposure Control Plan, please come by the nurse’s office so they can show you how to put gloves on appropriately and remove them safely.

13. HEPATITIS B
What is Hepatitis B – serious viral infection of the liver.
What are the symptoms – nausea, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellow skin color)
A percentage of people will become a chronic carrier in which they remain contagious for life, even if they have no symptoms.
Hepatitis B can lead to cirrhosis of the liver in chronic carriers.
Hepatitis B is spread from mother to infant during birth, through contaminated needles and through contact with blood or body fluids from an infected person.
Side Effects from the Hepatitis B vaccine include: soreness at the injection site, swelling, itching, redness, warmth, bruising at the injection site, fever, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, joint pain, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness and weakness.

14. EMPLOYEE HEPATITIS B SHOTS
Hepatitis B vaccine series shall be provided (including any boosters needed) free of charge to all employees in Category I or Category II job descriptions.
Given in a 3 dose schedule over the period of one year. You must get all the shots to be vaccinated. If you have missed a dose in the past, you do not have to repeat the entire series.
New employees should start series within 10 days of hire. If you have had antibody testing showing that you are immunized, you have medical reasons that advise you not to get the vaccine, or you do not want to get the vaccine for personal reasons, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET THE VACCINE. Acceptance forms and Declination Forms should be kept on file for all employees at Central Office.

15. WHAT IF YOU ARE EXPOSED?
If you have an exposure, report it immediately to your supervisor! Don’t wait!
Fill out an exposure incident report and work with your school nurse, principal, and central services to follow the exposure control plan!

DO NOT GO TO THE DOCTOR UNLESS IT IS LIFE- THREATENING WITHOUT FIRST CONSULTING

17. Quick Review!
Treat everyone as if they have a disease! WEAR YOUR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)!
BBP Policy and Exposure Control Plan are located in the following offices: Principal, Central Office and Online Policy Manual.
BBP training due 10 days from hire and annually within one week of the beginning of the school year.
